Softball to Host Summit at 3 p.m.


RADNOR, Pa. - The Cabrini softball team hosts Summit today in a Colonial States Athletic Conference softball doubleheader at Cabrini Field. Opening pitch is at 3 p.m.
 
The two teams met in Clarks Summit, Pa. last April, where the Blue and White captured a pair of wins, topping the Defenders 15-4 and 11-1.
 
The Cavaliers broke open the scoring early in the first game, with three runs in the first and five runs in the second inning. The Blue and White added another run in the third inning and six in the fourth inning, while holding the Defenders to just four runs through five innings of action.
 
Sophomore Francesca Formisano had a pinch hit three run home run in the fourth inning, while seven other Cavaliers tallied a RBI in the win.
 
Senior Kaitlyn Cooper led the Blue and White to victory in game two, after going 2-3 from the batter's box and recording four RBI. Cabrini scored two runs in the first inning, seven in the second inning and two in the fourth inning.
 
Sophomore Kaitlyn Hohman pitched five innings, struck out four Defenders and surrendered just one run on five hits.
 
The Blue and White remain in first place in the conference, as a pair of wins over the Rosemont Ravens on Saturday improved the Cavaliers to 6-9 and 4-0 in the CSAC.
 
In game one, another dominant first inning by Cabrini led the Blue and White to a 9-0 win over the Ravens. The Cavaliers scored six runs in the first on five hits and two stolen bases.
 
Cabrini scored two more runs in the second and one in the fifth, while the defense held Rosemont scoreless in the bottom half, triggering the eight run rule.
 
Seven Cavaliers notched a hit in the game one victory over the Ravens, while the team combined for 14 total hits. Sophomore Emily Smull led the way with a 3-3 performance from the plate, including a three run home run, the first hom run of her career, and four RBI.
 
Sophomore Jess Giordano struck out eight Ravens on her way to picking up her third win on the season, as the sophomore improved to 3-4 in the pitcher's circle.
 
The Cavaliers kept their feet on the gas in game two, as the Blue and White scored an 11-1 win to complete the sweep at Rosemont.
 
Cabrini scored five runs in the first inning, five in the third inning and added an insurance run in the fifth inning. The defense allowed just one run through five innings, as Hohman earned the win in the circle.
 
The Cavaliers combined for 15 hits this time around. Giordano tallied three hits, while Cooper, junior Lindsay Savar, sophomore Christine Ferraro and freshmen Taylor Franchville and Marissa Alpaugh each recorded a pair.
 
On the season, Alpaugh leads all Cavaliers with 17 hits, two home runs and 10 RBI. Savar holds a team high .375 batting average, along with 15 hits, one home run and six RBI.
 
Giordano ranks second on the team with nine RBI. Giordano and Ferraro also have 15 hits on the year.
 
Giordano and Hohman have been solid in the pitcher's circle so far this year, as the sophomores have combined for six wins.
 
Giordano has a team best 3.33 ERA, while Hohman ranks second with a 4.58 ERA. Giordano also leads the Cavaliers with 27 strike outs and 48.2 innings pitched.
 
Summit is 3-11 overall and opens CSAC action today at Cabrini Field. The Defenders are looking to get back into the win column as they're currently on a four game skid.
 
The Defenders hosted Lancaster Bible on Wednesday and fell 10-0 and 9-0. After a scoreless first inning in game one, the Chargers earned four runs in the second inning, five runs in the fifth inning and one in the fourth inning.
 
Lancaster Bible scored a pair of runs to open the second game. Two innings later, the Chargers four runs on one hit and two Summit errors.
 
The Chargers finished strong with two runs in the fourth inning and one run in the fifth, while holding the Defenders scoreless the rest of the way.
 
The Defenders have relied on senior Lauren Shepard at the plate in 2016. The senior leads all Defenders with a .457 batting average, 21 hits, 18 RBI, six doubles and a .587 slugging percentage on the year. Freshman Allison Glennon ranks second in RBI with 13, while her 14 hits and .318 batting average are good for fourth on the team.
 
Glennon is 2-5 in the Circle for the Defenders and currently holds an 11.03 ERA. The rookie pitcher has a team high 26 strike outs.
