RADNOR, Pa. - For the third consecutive year, the Cabrini softball team has earned a spot in the Colonial States Athletic Conference Championship. The Cavaliers will open the CSAC Championship Round on Saturday with a 10 a.m. tilt against Marywood at Neumann University in Aston, Pa.
Cabrini, the tournament's number two seed, joined the host and top seed Neumann with first round byes, while number four seed Marywood and sixth seed Cedar Crest earned their spots via first round tournament victories.
While Cabrini and Marywood will open the day's play, Neumann and Cedar Crest will take the field for game two at Noon. The losers of the first two games will meet at 2 p.m., with the loser to be eliminated from the tournament. The winners from games one and two will meet at 4 p.m. With the double elimination format, three teams will advance to Sunday's action. Â
In last year's postseason tournament, the number two seeded Cavaliers made their way to the title game against the one seed, Neumann, but fell 7-2.Â
The Blue and White last met the Pacers on April 12 in Scranton, Pa., where the Cavaliers scored 8-3 and 8-4 wins.
The Cavaliers scored five runs through the first two innings of game one, before the Pacers answered back with two runs in the second. The Blue and White scored two runs in the sixth and once more in the seventh, while holding the Pacers to just one run in the sixth to capture the victory.
Trailing 2-1 in the fourth inning of game two, senior Kaitlyn Cooper's triple to right center scored three Cavaliers. Marywood got a run back in the bottom half but Cabrini out scored Marywood 4-1 the rest of the way to complete the sweep.
Cabrini finished the year ranked 34th in the nation with 6.74 runs per game. The Blue and White closed its regular season with 1-0 and 6-1 wins at Keystone, improving the club to 23-15 overall and 19-3 in the CSAC.Â
Sophomore Christine Ferraro leads the Blue and White with a .477 batting average, 36 runs scored and a conference leading 21 stolen bases. Junior Lindsay Savar has been on an offensive tear, having homered in four of her last six games. The junior is tied for third in the CSAC with seven home runs, while her 32 RBI ties Cooper for first on the club.Â
Freshman Marissa Alpaugh ranks seventh in the nation for first basemen with a batting average of .430 and leads the club with 52 hits and nine doubles, while adding four home runs and 25 RBI. The rookie's 241 putouts are good for first on the team and second in the conference.
Sophomore Jess Giordano, recently named CSAC Pitcher of the Year, finished the regular season 12-5 in the circle. In 110.2 innings pitched, Giordano has recorded 17 complete games, four shutouts, a team low 2.20 ERA with 56 strike outs.Â
Marywood earned a number four seed in this year's post season tournament, after going 22-13 overall and 17-5 in conference play. On Thursday, Marywood head coach Bob Fitzsimmons earned his 250th career win, as the Pacers rallied for a 5-4 comeback victory over fifth seeded Immaculata.
The Mighty Macs held a 4-2 lead heading into the fifth inning but the Pacers offense opened for three runs in the bottom half to take a 5-4 lead. Freshman Kristie Alvarez improved to 10-4 in the pitchers circle, after tossing seven innings and allowing just two earned runs on 10 hits.Â
Freshman Kate O'Meara leads all Pacers with a .453 batting average and .500 on base percentage, while sophomore Alexa Scala sports a .394 batting average and leads the club with 31 RBI, 39 runs scored, six triples and three home runs.Â
Junior Brooke Labs holds a team high 46 hits and 13 doubles, to go along with 30 RBI and 29 runs scored. Alvarez has tossed seven complete games this season and has tallied 29 strike outs, while allowing 109 hits and 39 earned runs in 79.1 innings pitched.Â
Cabrini welcomed Neumann to Cabrini Field on April 16, where the Blue and White fell 7-4 and 10-5.
Cedar Crest has a tough matchup ahead, as Neumann boasts one of the nation's top offenses. The Knights' 7.61 runs per game average and .354 batting average ranks 13th and 23rd, respectively, in all of Division III.
Neumann closed its regular season with a pair of 10-0 shutouts over Summit on April 30. The defending CSAC champs earned the top seed in this year's CSAC tournament, after finishing 24-14 overall and 21-1 in the conference.Â
Senior Danielle Grayson's seven home runs is is tied for third in the CSAC, while her 41 RBI ranks fourth. On the year, the senior is averaging .420 in the batter's box and has recorded 34 hits, seven doubles and 15 runs scored.
Senior Melissa Rozumalski ranks second on the Knights with 40 hits and 35 RBI. The senior holds a .381 batting average, to go along with three triples, two home runs and 28 runs scored.Â
The Knights have relied heavily on freshman Julia Cox at the plate, as the rookie leads the team with a .438 batting average, 49 hits, 11 doubles and 36 runs scored.Â
Senior Lauren Wilkie is 8-4 on the year in the pitchers circle with a 2.26 ERA, 28 earned runs, 55 strike outs, 12 complete games and two saves.Â
The Blue and White came away with a pair of wins over Cedar Crest on April 19, topping the Falcons 10-1 and 6-5.Â
Cedar Crest finished its regular season 21-20 overall and 11-11 in the CSAC. The Falcons earned a spot in tomorrow's championship round, after defeating Gwynedd Mercy 10-5 on Thursday.Â
The Falcons will look to freshman Laura Rau to get it done in the circle, as the rookie has done all year long. Rau was named the CSAC Rookie of the Year after going 13-9 and fanning a league high 102 batters, to go along with a a 3.30 batting average and 14 complete games.Â
Sophomore Kaylee Martinez ranks first in the conference with 61 hits and 11 home runs, while her 48 RBI ranks second and 49 runs scored and .851 slugging percentage rank third in the CSAC. Martinez also holds a team high .455 batting average.Â
Sophomore Molly Schnaubelt is averaging .386 from the plate and has notched 49 hits, 18 doubles, seven home runs and 27 runs scored.Â
