RADNOR, PA – Cabrini's upset bid fell just short, as the Cabrini volleyball team suffered a 3-2 loss to No. 19 Stevens University today on Senior Day.
The thrilling 15-25, 25-13, 26-24, 23-25, 15-11 loss sent the Blue and White to 27-6 on the year, while the Mustangs improved to 30-1.
Senior
Anne-Marie Jones led the Cavaliers with 14 kills, as the senior moved into second place on the program's all-time kills list with 1,069.
Freshmen
Steph Judkins and
Olivia Blankenbiller added double-doubles in the loss. Judkins paired 10 kills and 11 digs, while Blankenbiller notched 38 assists and 12 digs.
Junior
Ashley Shannon recorded a team-high 20 digs to lead five Cavaliers with double figure digs. Judkins also joined seniors
Kaylee Plisinski and
Chelsea Jones with three block assists each.
Senior Annika Schwartz led the Mustangs with 18 kills and 11 digs, while junior Moriah Savage added 13 kills. Senior Deanna Bradbury recorded 37 digs, while sophomores Caroline Dangel and Julie Nightwine combined for 50 assists.
The Cavaliers jumped to an early lead in the first set, using a 7-0 spurt to build an early insurmountable lead.
Stevenson turned the tables in the second set, as the Mustangs scored 12 of the set's final 14 points to even the match at 1-1.
With both teams settled into the match, the action picked up in a third frame that featured 12 ties. Neither team could really gain any momentum, as the score was deadlocked at 16, 17, 18, 19, 20 and 21.
Trailing 24-22, the Cavaliers took advantage of a Stevenson service error and used a block by
Anne-Marie Jones and Plisinksi to even the score at 24. The Mustangs recorded to end the frame with a kills and double block.
The fourth set played out much like the third, as the score remained within two points through much of the set. The Cavaliers owned a 20-17 late, but Stevenson rallied for four straight points to take a 21-20 lead.
Consecutive points by both teams evened the score at 23 before Judkins and
Anne-Marie Jones recorded kills to end the frame and even the match at two sets apiece.
Stevesnon took control of the deciding set in the early going, building a 7-2 lead. The Blue and White battled back, pulling within two points three times but could not get over the hump.
Proir to today's match, the Cavaliers honored its three seniors,
Anne-Marie Jones,
Chelsea Jones and Plisinski. These ladies have led the Cavaliers to 96 victories, including a 44-0 mark in CSAC matches and three consecutive league titles, while accumulating 2,032 kills, 1,008 digs and 357 blocks.
The Cavaliers will return to action on Thursday, as they host a semifinal round match of the 2017 CSAC Tournament. The Blue and White will face the lowest remaining seed after Tuesday's first round matches.
Thursday's first serve is slated for 7pm in Nerney Field House.
