RADNOR, PA – Senior Evan Downey recorded three of his four points in the final nine minutes of today's game to help the No. 15 Cabrini men's lacrosse team pull away from No. 12 Ursinus College.  

The Cavaliers scored a 14-9 victory over the visiting Bears to improve to 4-2 on the year, while Ursinus suffered its first loss of the campaign, falling to 5-1.

Sophomore Timmy Brooks led the Blue and White with a season high four goals, while Downey and freshman Jake Klein paired two goals and two assists each.  Sophomore Jordan Krug and senior Ryan Hannan added a pair of goals, while freshman Drew Hanna added two assists.

Downey also corralled seven ground balls and joined freshman Tommy DeLuca with two caused turnovers each.  Sophomore Trey Critides also went a career best 12-22 at the faceoff spot.

Freshman goaltender Matt Nestler recorded nine saves and four ground balls to earn the win.

Cabrini freshman Mike Gerzabek put the Cavaliers ahead early, but the Bears responded with three consecutive goals to take a 3-1 lead after the first quarter.

The Blue and White answered in the second period with three unanswered goals, as senior Ryan Hannan recorded his first tally of the season, while Brooks and Krug found the back of the net to give the Cavaliers a 4-3 lead.

Ursinus evened the score with 3:34 left in the half, but Cabrini fought off a two-man advantage for Bears to keep the score deadlocked. The Cavaliers regained the lead with just seven seconds left in the half, as Gerzabek hit Brooks for a 5-4 lead.

Despite outshooting Ursinus 26-18 in the opening 30 minutes of action, the Cavaliers carried a slim 5-4 lead into the halftime break.

Cabrini carried the momentum from Brooks' goal into the third quarter, as Krug, Klein and Brooks recorded goals in the first 3:30 of the half, pushing the lead to 8-4.  

The Bears responded with three consecutive goals of their own, pulling within 8-7 with 5:51 left in the period.  Goals by Brooks and junior Zack Gregory pushed the lead back to three goals with just 2:30 left in the third before Ursinus added another goal with 66 seconds remaining in the third.

Similar to the second quarter, the Blue and White solved the Bears' defense to score in the final seconds of the frame, carrying a 11-8 lead into the final period.

Ursinus looked to begin its comeback early in the final period, before the Cabrini defense took over.  The Cavaliers held Ursinus to just three shots in the final 11 minutes, with none reaching Nestler, and forced the Bears into five turnovers.

Meanwhile, the Blue and White took advantage of the Ursinus miscues. Downey scored the first of his goals with just under nine minutes to play, before hitting Hannan for a goal with just under five minutes to play.  Downey added another unassisted tally with 98 seconds on the clock to seal the victory.

Freshman Bobby McClure led Ursinus with two goals and two assists, while junior Lou Harrison and sophomore Peter DeSimone added two goals each. Freshman Nolan Sachs caused three turnovers and scooped four ground balls, while sophomore goaltender Elliott Shevitz notched 16 saves.

The Cavaliers will open Colonial States Athletic Conference play on Tuesday, as they welcome Rosemont College (2-4, 0-0 CSAC) to Edith Robb Dixon Field with a chance to make history.

With a win on Tuesday, Cabrini will claim its 102nd consecutive conference win, tying Salisbury's NCAA record. Game time is scheduled for 4pm.
