RADNOR, PA – The Cabrini men's lacrosse team stepped into the NCAA record book today at Edith Robb Dixon Field, as it topped Rosemont College 20-1 in the Colonial States Athletic Conference opener for both clubs.
Today's victory extended the No. 13 Cavaliers' conference win streak to 102 games, matching Salisbury's NCAA record. The Sea Gulls went undefeated from March 14, 1995 through March 31, 2009 to establish the record.
"This is a record that the kids from the 2001 team own as much of a piece as the one who were on the field today and every player between the two," said head coach
Steve Colfer following the victory.
"That's what makes this very special. It really connects those groups throughout the years and they can all share in this."
Cabrini (5-2, 1-0 CSAC) has not lost to a conference foe since an 18-8 loss to Wesley in a PA Athletic Conference (PAC) tilt at the end of the 2000 season and gone undefeated in conference games in Colfer's 17 years at the helm.
The Cavaliers will have a chance to break the NCAA mark on Saturday, April 1, when they visit Keystone College.
The Blue and White's 102nd straight win came in dominant fashion, as the Cavaliers outshot the Ravens 67-11 and won 19 of the game's 24 faceoffs.
Eleven Cavaliers marked the scorebook in today's win, with senior
Ryan Hannan, junior
Zack Gregory, sophomore
Bill Morgan and freshman
Tyler Kostack notching three goals each.
Senior
Evan Downey paired two goals and two assists, while freshman
Drew Hanna served up five assists, just one helper shy of the program's single game record.
Freshmen
Harrison Schadt and
Tyler Moschella also found the back of the net, marking the rookies' first career goals.
The Blue and White keyed its offense at the X, where sophomore
Trey Critides won nine of his 11 chances, while junior
Riley Michaels went 8-10.
Cabrini also secured a season high 46 ground balls, with 23 players scooping at least one. Michaels led the team with 7, while freshman
Harrison Schadt grabbed five.
While its offense clicked on all cylinders, the Blue and White offense was just as stingy. Eleven different Cavaliers forced a turnover on the day, while Cabrini held Rosemont to just 13-26 in clear attempts.
Cabrini held the Ravens to a season low 11 shots, with six coming in the game's first quarter. Freshman
Matt Nestler and sophomore
Riley White combined for three saves between the Blue and White pipes, as just four of Rosemont's shots were on target.
Freshman Brandon Krause scored the lone goal for the Ravens (2-5, 0-1 CSAC), while sophomore Cassius Christie notched 22 saves.
Cabrini will step out of conference play on Saturday, as it hosts No. 11 SUNY Cortland (5-0) in a nonconference showdown. The opening faceoff is slated for 2pm at Edith Robb Dixon Field.
