Softball Hosts Keystone in Home Opener

Prior to today's first pitch, the Cavaliers and Giants will join the rest of the Colonial States Athletic conference softball teams in holding a moment of silence in remembrance of Cabrini head coach Mitchell Kline, wjo lost his battle with cancer on September 15, 2016.  moment of silence.

During his four years at Cabrini, Kline led the Blue and White to 91 wins and appearances in the CSAC title game three times. He led the Cavaliers to a 27-12 mark in 2015, earning CSAC Coach of the Year honors.

Cabrini clinched the number two seed in last year's CSAC Tournament with its sweep of the Giants on the final day of the regular season. Kiley Sharp and sophomore Jenna Rodriguez held the Giants to one hit on the day, while Kaitlyn Cooper knocked in the game's lone run.

Despite the loss, Keystone sophomore Alyssa Hughes matched Sharp and Rodriguez in the pitcher's circle, allowing one run on five hits in the complete game.

The Cavaliers found their offense in the night cap, banging out 13 hits including a pair of home runs. The Blue and White took advantage of a pair of Keystone errors in the third to take a 2-1 lead. Seniors Lindsay Savar and Amber Dietrich clubbed two-run dingers in the fifth and seventh innings to secure the win.  

In the pitcher's circle, junior Jess Giordano surrendered three hits and one unearned run to earn the complete game victory.

Cabrini Last Time Out: Suffers 6-2, 10-2 Losses at Widener (3/23/17, Chester, PA)
Despite grabbing an early lead on Giordano's RBI double in the top of the first, the Cavaliers surrendered runs in the first four innings. Cabrini recorded 11 hits in the game, but stranded 10 runners on the base paths, including leaving the bases loaded in the second and two on in the fourth and sixth innings.

Freshman Alexandra Schell tallied a game high three hits, one more than Giordano, Dietrich and senior Taylor Mack.

Giordano fell to 1-4 in the pitcher's circle after allowing five earned runs on eight hits.

The Blue and White must have used its allotted his in the opener, as it struggled to find offense in the night cap.  Trailing 2-0, the Cavaliers plated an unearned run in the top of the third. Cabrini's other run came on a Savar blast over the center field wall for the senior's first home run of the season.

Four Cavaliers accounted for the club's four hits, while senior Taylor Gallagher and junior Emily Smull allowed six earned runs on 10 Widener hits.  

Keystone Last Time Out: Keystone 10, Franciscan 4; Albertus Magnus 5, Keystone 4 (3/17/17, Myrtle Beach SC)
The Giants plated five runs in the sixth and seventh innings and recorded 14 base knocks to score a 10-4 win over Franciscan.

Senior Sarah Stacy and freshman Hunter Schantz recorded three base hits each, while Hunter joined senior Antonette Scialpi and sophomore Samantha Monetti with two RBI each.

Hughes earned the complete game victory striking out five batters, while allowing four earned runs on 11 hits.

After struggling through the first three innings against Albertus Magnus, Keystone found its offense in the fourth inning.  The Giants took advantage of two defensive miscues and plated four runs on four hits to take a 4-2 lead.  

The lead was short-lived, as Keystone committed two errors of its own in the top of the fifth, leading to three Albertus Magnus runs.

Stacey went 2-4 with two RBI in the night cap, as freshman Jordan Hodle allowed just two earned runs on seven hits.

  • Giordano ranks among league leaders with 14 base hits and leads the Blue and White with a .483 batting average.
  • The Cavaliers have committed 26 errors through 10 contests, second most in the CSAC,
  • The Blue and White has clubbed three home runs thus far.  Only Cairn has hit more, with four.
  • Schell has hit safely in each of the Cavaliers last seven contests. After beginning her career 0-5, she has hit .400 during the streak.
  • Savar and junior Chrissy Ferraro are the only Cavaliers to start all 10 games at teh same position in teh field and in teh batting order.

5 Factors for Keystone
  • Stacey has hit safely in six of the Giants' eight contests and leads the team with a .407 batting average.
  • Keystone is one of the CSAC's top fielding teams, boasting a .938 fielding percentage, third in the conference.
  • The Giants' pitching staff owns a 4.02 earned run average, third in the league.
  • Keystone has stolen six of seven bases and laid down six sacrifice bunts. Stacey and freshman Mariah Loughney led the club with two stolen bases each.
  • Despite hitting just .280, senior Emily Long has crossed the plate 10 times in eight games, third in the CSAC.
