HOBOKEN, NJ – Senior
Sara DeVita recorded her first career multi-goal game today, as the senior led the Cabrini field hockey team to a 2-1 win at Stevens Institute of Technology.
The win snapped the Cavaliers' two game losing streak and improved the Blue and White to 2-5 on the season.
The Cavaliers wasted little time grabbing an early advantage in the action, as the team forced five penalty corners in the opening 3:09 of the game. Cabrini took advantage of the fifth corner, as DeVita found the back of the net on a long shot off the corner.
The Blue and White held its lead for 10 minutes when Victoria Alvarez put the Ducks on the board.
Both teams' offensive attacks were on display in the first half, as they combined for 33 shots and 19 penalty corners. The play of the goaltenders kept the game tight, posting 20 combined saves before the break.
The Blue and White continued to apply offensive pressure in the second half. The pressure paid off in the 51st minute.
Following a penalty corner, freshman
Maggie Nolen's shot was saved, but DeVita was in place for the rebound, beating Stevens' goaltender Nicole Mottole top shelf.
The Ducks pushed to tie the game in the final minutes, but senior goaltender
Taylor Bookman anchored a stingy defensive effort. The senior recorded four of her 11 saves in the final six minutes, while sophomore
Holly Gremmel made an important defensive save with 30 seconds to play.
Senior
Maddy Worley recorded a career high 10 shots, while classmate
Jackie Neary added six. Bookman tallied 11 saves to secure the Blue and White victory.
Alvarez and Janet Vill notched seven shots each for Stevens (1-5), while Mottole totaled 19 saves.
The Cavaliers will open Colonial States Athletic Conference play on Saturday, when they host Cedar Crest College (4-1, 0-0 CSAC). Game time is slated for 1pm at Edith Robb Dixon Field.
