RADNOR, PA – Despite a valiant effort, the Cavaliers could not find enough offense, as the Cabrini field hockey team suffered a 3-0 loss to Susquehanna University today at Edith Robb Dixon Field.
The nonconference loss dropped the Blue and White to 3-8 on the season, while the River Hawks improved to 8-7.
After nearly 25 minutes of scoreless action, Susquehanna opened the scoring in the 26th minute, when junior Hunter Pitman's crossing pass found sophomore Jenni Sabbak at the far post.
The score remained 1-0 at the half, as Cabrini's junior
Devon Scharf recorded four of her saves in an opening period that saw the Cavaliers fight off five River Hawks' penalty corner.
The River Hawks wasted little time doubling their lead in the second half, as Pitman found sophomore Vivian Simone for a goal just 70 seconds into the period.
Susquehanna added a goal in the game's final seconds, as a pass from freshman AJ Smith deflected off a Cabrini defender into the goal.
The Cavaliers failed to record a shot in the second half and forced just one second half penalty corner to 10 for the River Hawks.
Sophomore
Trisha Billig led Cabrini with two shots, while Scharf tallied six saves in the loss.
Today's game also marked the program's annual Play for the Cure cancer awareness game. The Cavaliers wore special warm-up t-shirts and pink socks before and during the game. The shirts were also available for sale, with all proceeds being donated to charity.
Prior to the game, the team heard from Heidi Scharf, cancer survivor and mother of
Devon Scharf. Mrs. Scharf discussed her diagnosis and recovery story and spread a message of overcoming adversity on and off the field.
The Cavaliers will return to Atlantic East Conference play on Thursday, when they visit Wesley College (5-8, 1-1 Atlantic East). Game time is slated for 7pm in Dover, DE.
