Volleyball Rallies to Top Marywood in Atlantic East Semifinal

RADNOR, PA – It didn't go as the team planned it, but in the end the Cabrini volleyball team punched its ticket to Saturday's Atlantic East Conference tournament championship match with tonight's 3-1 (25-27, 25-13, 25-21, 25-14) victory over Marywood University at Nerney Field House.

The Cavaliers (22-9), the tournament's top seed, will host number two seed Marymount University on Saturday at 5pm for the inaugural Atlantic East Conference title.

The Saints (25-4) secured their place in Saturday's title match with a convincing 3-0 (25-14, 25-12, 25-12) win over number three seeded Neumann.

Sophomore Steph Judkins led the Blue and White with 17 kills and 17 digs, marking her 15th double-double of the season. Junior Katrina Shelley added 12 kills.

Senior Emily Shannon fell just two kills shy of her second triple-double of the season, paring eight kills, 14 assists and 10 digs. Freshman Hannah Dalton also stuffed the stat sheet with seven kills, four aces, four digs and a pair of blocks.

Freshman Amelia Ballard narrowly missed a double dip with 27 assists and eight digs, while freshman Gina Custer matched Judkins' 17 digs, three more than senior Ashley Shannon.

The Cavaliers got off to a slow start and the Pacers took full advantage. Marywood broke a 5-5 deadlock with a 7-1 spurt to build a 12-6 lead. The advantage swelled to 18-10 before Cabrini made a comeback.

The Blue and White scored 12 of the next 14 points to take a 23-21 lead on a Dalton kill. The lead was short-lived, as Marywood rallied with three straight points to regain a 24-23 lead.  The teams evened the score at 24 and 25 before a kill by freshman Nicole Cashman and a Marywood service ace closed the opening frame.

Cabrini head coach Eric Schaefer refocused the Cavaliers after the first set and it showed on the court. The Cavaliers blew open the set, as Dalton served the club to nine consecutive points and a commanding 23-10 lead.

With the match tied at one set apiece, both clubs looked to grab the advantage in the third frame. The action went back and forth, as evidenced by seven ties.

The Cavaliers recorded 10 of the next 12 points, turning an 11-11 tie into a comfortable 19-13 lead. The Pacers, battled back late in the set, pulling to within 23-21, but a Shelly kill stopped the Marywood run before Judkins and Dalton combined for a block to end the set.

The final set played much like the third, as the Cavaliers blew open an 11-11 deadlock. Custer served Cabrini to five consecutive points, before the Cavaliers put a stamp on the match with Dalton serving the club to the final seven points of the night.

Junior Peri Sheerin led Marywood (17-12) with 12 kills, while freshman Sara Burgos paired 25 assists and 11 digs.  Junior Jordan Vossler added a team-high 17 digs in the loss.
