Volleyball Falls to Marymount in 4 Set Championship Thriller

RADNOR, PA – The Cavaliers and Saints played their second four set thriller of the season tonight, but unlike the first the Cavaliers fell on the losing side.

The Cabrini volleyball championship run came to an end today, as the Cavaliers suffered a 3-1 loss to Marymount University in the championship match of the Atlantic East Conference tournament.

The 33-31, 25-23, 23-25, 25-18 loss dropped the Blue and White to 22-10 on the season.  The Cavaliers must now wait for the NCAA and Eastern College Athletic Conference (ECAC) to determine if the team's resume earns a postseason bid.

The loss could mark the final appearance at Nerney Field House Cabrini's senior trio of Kassie Ockford, Ashley Shannon and Emily Shannon. The group has led the Cavaliers to 94 victories, including three consecutive Colonial States Athletic Conference (CSAC) titles.

Sophomore Steph Judkins led the Blue and White with 23 kills and 18 digs, and became the first player in program history to amass 500 kills in a single season.

Junior Katrina Shelly added a season-high 17 kills, four blocks and six digs. Freshman Hannah Dalton chipped in with six, kills, six blocks and four service aces.

Emily Shannon matched Judkins' double-double with 26 assists and 11 digs, while freshman Amelia Ballard narrowly missed the double dip with 14 helpers, eight digs and a pair of aces. Ashley Shannon earned team high honors with 23 digs.

The intensity inside Nerney Field House was at a fever pitch from the night's first serve, as the Saints cruised to an early 11-7 lead. The Cavaliers swung the set's energy with a 8-1 spurt and gained a 17-14 led. Cabrini led 21-17 before Marymount made a run of its own. The Saints battled back to even the score a 22 and 23.

A Judkins kill staved off Marymount's first set point at 24-23 before a double block by Judkins and Dalton gave the Cavaliers the first of their seven set points. The Saints fought off each one before three consecutive double blocks turned a 31-30 deficit into a 33-31 opening set for the Saints.

Marymount maintained a slim lead throughout much of the second frame, extending its lead to 19-13 before Cabrini responded. Five straight points pulled the Cavaliers to within 19-18.

The Cavaliers managed to pull even at 23 when Ballard found Judkins for a kill, but the Saints paired a Cabrini attack error and a kill by sophomore Mykael Johnson to end the set.

Despite exchanging the lead four times in the third set, neither team could put much air space between it and the opposition. With the score tied at 18, the Cavaliers reeled off four consecutive points, the first time in the frame either team had scored four straight points.

Marymount pulled within 23-21 before a Saints' attack error gave Cabrini a 24-21 lead. The Saints fought off two more set points before Emily Shannon's kill ended the set to put Cabrini on the board.

Much like the first three sets, neither team could seize control of the action, as evidenced by seven ties, the final coming at 11-11. The Saints scored six of the next seven points, which proved to be the cushion they needed.

Minutes later, a Dalton service ace pulled the Blue and White to within 17-16, but Cabrini could not pull even. Marymount pushed its advantage to 21-16 before a Judkins kill and double block by Ockford and freshman Marie Hamilton cut the Cabrini deficit to 21-18. Those would be the Cavaliers' final points of the night, as Marymount netted the last four points of the match.

Senior Caroline Hanson was named Most Valuable Player after pairing 20 kills and 24 points for the Saints (26-4). Fellow senior Emily Abramaitys and Johnson combined for 31 kills, while sophomore Maggie Viniard posted 60 assists.
