ALEXANDRIA, VA – After its original game date was snowed out, the Cabrini men's lacrosse team finally met the Hampden-Sydney College Tigers today, with the Cavaliers scoring a 20-8 victory in a game played at St. Stephen's & St. Agnes School in Alexandria, VA.
The No. 6 Cavaliers improved to 8-1 with the victory, while the Tigers fell to 7-3 overall.
The Blue and White built an early lead, as junior
Jordan Krug netted the first of his five goals at the 11:33 mark. The junior's second of the day came midway through the period, before the Tigers evened the score at 2-2 with five minutes to play in the opening quarter.
Cabrini built some distance between itself and HSC in the final 2:34 of the period, as junior
Timmy Brooks marked the scoring column twice with unassisted tallies. The goals marked the 100th and 101st of the junior's career, making him the 14th member of the program's century club.
The Cavaliers continued their scoring run into the second quarter, netting five unanswered goals in the opening six minutes of the quarter. Five different Cavaliers recorded goals, including senior
Josh Moore who notched his first goal of the season and third of his career.
HSC ended Cabrini's scoring run at the 6:59 mark before sophomore
Jake Klein pushed the Blue and White lead to 10-3. The Cavaliers carried a comfortable 10-4 lead into the halftime break after outshooting the Tigers 24-14 in the opening 30 minutes.
The halftime break did nothing to slow the Cavaliers' offensive production, as they scored the opening three goals of the third quarter. Sophomore
Mike Gerzabek scored his second of the season less than 40 seconds into the period, before Krug connected with sophomore
Ty Kostack and Brooks for a pair of man-up goals.
Kostack and Krug returned to the score sheet in the final minutes of the quarter, as Cabrini carried a 15-5 lead into the fourth quarter, despite being outshot 14-6 in the period.
The Tigers took advantage of a Blue and White penalty, opening the period with a pair of man-up goals, but the Cavaliers responded with five consecutive goals of their own.
Sophomore
Matt LoParo joined Krug and Gerzabek with goals in the five minute, 4-0 run. Junior
Bill Morgan closed the scoring with his second goal of the campaign in the final minutes.
Despite both teams recording 36 shots in the day, Cabrini made the most of its chances, scoring 10 goals on its 12 second half shots.
Krug recorded a season-high seven points and matched a season-best five goals. Brooks and Kostack finished the day with three goals each, while Klein and LoParo posted four points each, combining for three goals and five helpers.
Junior
Riley White anchored the Blue and White defensive effort with 10 saves in his 55 minutes of action, while sophomore
Tommy DeLuca recorded three of Cabrini's 10 caused turnovers.
Senior
Riley Michaels went 14-25 at the faceoff spot, earning game-high honors with seven ground balls, one more than White, while seven Cavaliers secured two ground balls each.
Ian Levin led HSC with three goals and an assist, while Chandler Shaheen scored twice. Jake Brummett won eight of his 12 faceoffs, while Mitch Renfrow suffered the loss after recording five of the team's seven saves.
The Cavaliers will return to Colonial States Athletic Conference action on Thursday, as the Blue and White host Neumann University (1-7, 0-0 CSAC). Game time is set for 1pm at Edith Robb Dixon Field.
