RADNOR, PA – The Cabrini men's lacrosse team earned one of 16 spots in the third round of the 2018 NCAA Men's Lacrosse Tournament today, as it topped Colorado College 21-10 at Edith Robb Dixon Field.
The win improved the No. 8 Cavaliers to 17-2 on the year, tying the program record for wins in a season.
Standing between the Blue and White and a second consecutive trip to the national quarterfinal round is No. 5 Wesleyan University, who scored a 16-12 win over SUNY Cortland in another of today's second round games. Game location or time have not yet been announced.
Seven Cavaliers tallied at least three points in today's victory, with sophomore
Matt LoParo leading the way with six points, including a season-high five assists. Junior
Timmy Brooks netted five goals, while classmate
Jordan Krug paired four goals and a helper.
The sophomore trio of
Ty Kostack,
Jake Klein and
Mike Gerzabek recorded four points each, combining for six goals and six assists, while classmate
Drew Hanna added a goal and two dimes.
Defensemen
Joey Hoey and
Tommy DeLuca anchored the Cabrini back line, as the duo scooped five ground balls each and combined for three caused turnovers.
Eleven other Cavaliers recorded two ground balls each, as the Blue and White secured 36 loose balls, while 10 players accounted for Cabrini's 11 caused turnovers.
Junior goaltender
Riley White recorded 10 saves to earn his 14th victory of the season.
Both teams exchanged goals in a low-scoring first half. Despite doubling the Tigers in first period shots, the game remained tied at 3-3 until the final seconds of the period, when LoParo hit Brooks to give Cabrini a 4-3 lead and momentum entering the second quarter.
Brooks' goal sparked a 5-0 run for the Cavaliers, including four tallies by the junior, as the Blue and White lead swelled to 8-3 midway through the frame. A late CC goal pulled the Tigers to within 9-5 at the break.
Cabrini's lead remained at four goals until midway through the third quarter, when the Cavaliers scored seven unanswered goals. The Cavaliers held CC scoreless over the next 9:09 of game time, spanning the third and fourth quarters.
Six Cavaliers marked the scoring column during the spurt, with Gerzabek notching two goals and LoParo serving up a trio of assists. Krug's one-handed goal put Cabrini ahead 17-6 with 13:324 to play.
The Tigers briefly interrupted the Cavaliers' scoring run at the 12:00 mark, but LoParo and junior
Bill Morgan combined to score the next three goals, pushing the advantage to 20-7 with just 6:16 on the clock.
The Blue and White outshot Colorado College 56-33 on the day, the eighth time this season Cabrini has recorded north of 50 shots, with 31 attempts on target. The Cavaliers were also a perfect 21-21 in clear attempts and recorded just 10 turnovers.
Senior Robbie Stern and junior Tyler Borko recorded three points each for the Tigers (13-2), while sophomore Coby Petau and freshman John Sutro joined the duo with two goals each. Junior Parker Woo went 15-21 at the faceoff spot and scooped seven ground balls, while sophomore goaltender Andrew Harwood notched 10 saves in the loss.
Wesleyan (15-3) advanced to Saturday's third round after a hard fought 16-12 home victory. The Cardinals sandwiched the halftime break with a 5-0 run that took the game from 7-6 with two minutes left in the second quarter to 12-6 with 5:22 left in the third.
Freshman Ronan Jacoby led Wesleyan with five goals and an assists, while junior Scott Irwin and senior Harry Stanton notched three goals each. Sophomore Zach Zavalick went 19-27 at the faceoff X and scooped 12 ground balls, while sophomore goaltender Otto Bohan posted 13 saves.
