SAN ANTONIO, TX – The Cabrini volleyball team completed its trip to San Antonio with an 0-4 mark, after the Cavaliers suffered a pair of tough losses today at the Trinity University National Invitational.
The Blue and White fell to No. 7 Gustavus Adolphus 3-0 (25-17, 25-21, 25-13) before dropping a hard fought 3-0 (27-25, 32-30, 25-23) result to Wisconsin-Stevens Point.
The Cavaliers took an early lead against Gustavus Adolphus (3-1), as the Blue and White began its second upset bid of the weekend. Despite building an early 5-1 lead, GVC responded with nine consecutive points. A 6-0 spurt later in the opening frame helped the Gusties clam the opening set.
After trailing by as many as seven points early in the second set, the Blue and White fought back to take an 18-14 lead. GVC answered with an 8-0 run of its own before taking the two sets to none lead.
The Gusties took control of the final set in the early going, scoring 13 of the frame's first 17 points. Cabrini pulled to within 18-11 late in the set before GVC closed the action with a 6-0 run.
Senior
Emily Shannon led the Cavaliers with 16 digs, 10 assists, and five kills, while sophomore
Steph Judkins paired 10 kills, seven digs an d a pair of service aces. Junior
Katrina Shelly notched eight kills and senior
Ashley Shannon chipped in with 11 digs.
The Blue and White looked to close the weekend on a high note, as it faced the Pointers (1-3). The first set was a back and forth affair until late in the first set when Cabrini used a 7-0 run to build a 23-18 lead. UWSP responded with a 6-0 run of its own to take a slim 24-23 lead. Both teams exchanged the next few points before a Cabrini attack error ended the set in UWSP's favor.
The second set was much like the first, featuring 13 ties. The Cavaliers took a five point lead midway through the set before the Pointers battled back. Cabrini held its lead at 23-21 but UWSP notched the next three points to reach set point. A service error evened the score at 24. The teams exchanged the next 13 points before the Pointers took advantage of a Cabrini service error to snap a 30 all tie and record the set winning point.
After trailing 16-9 in the third set, it was Cabrini's turn to battle back. The Blue and White chipped away at its deficit, eventually taking a 23-22 lead on an
Ashley Shannon service ace. It would be the Cavaliers' final point of the match, as UWSP netted the final three points of the day.
Judkins posted a double-double with 14 kills and 14 digs, while Shelly recorded 10 kills.
Emily Shannon also posted a double-double with 17 assists and 14 digs.
Ashley Shannon's 20 digs earned match high honors.
The Cavaliers have a few days to regroup before returning to action next Saturday, when they face Messiah (3-1) and Houghton (0-4). Both matches will take place at Messiah College in Granthan, PA.
