CHESTER, PA – The Cabrini volleyball team showed little rust, as it emerged from a 14-day break from competition with a 3-0 victory at Widener University tonight.
With the 25-17, 25-20, 25-23 win, the Cavaliers improved to 6-8 on the season.
The Blue and White used an early 5-0 spurt to build a comfortable lead in the opening set. Leading 17-13 late in the frame, the Cavaliers posted five consecutive points, as sophomore
Hannah Dalton's service ace pushed the lead to 22-13.
The teams went back and forth in the second set, with neither gaining an advantage. Midway through the frame, the Pride notched three straight points to take a 16-15 lead. The cushion was short-lived, as the Cavaliers responded with seven consecutive points to build an insurmountable 22-16 lead.
Once again, the third set went back and forth, as the teams tied the score 13 times. The Pride built a late 20-18 lead, as it looked to extend the match beyond three sets.
The Blue and White, however, had an answer, responding with six straight points to build a 24-20 lead. Widener fought off three match points before a kill by junior
Steph Judkins put the match to bed.
Judkins and freshman
Melanie Cotes-Rivera led Cabrini with double-doubles in the victory. Judkins paired a match-high 11 kills with 13 digs, while Cotes-Rivera recorded 14 assists and 10 digs.
Senior
Katrina Shelly added nine kills and 11 digs, one kill more than sophomore
Jordan Shemonski. Sophomore
Amelia Ballard scored a match-high 18 assists, with classmate
Gina Custer adding 10 digs. Dalton also scored five service aces.
Carly Venot and Claire Kaufmann led the Pride (5-14) with seven kills each, Ashley McAfee posted 14 digs.
Cabrini will head to Annvile, PA on Saturday for a tri-match at Lebanon Valley College. The Cavaliers will face the host Dutchwomen (10-8) at 10am and Bethany College (7-11) at 12pm.
