LYNCHBURG, VA – The Cavaliers scored five consecutive second quarter goals and rode the first half cushion to an 11-8 victory at No. 15 University of Lynchburg.
With the win, No. 8 Cabrini improved to 2-0 on the young season, while the host Hornets fell to 1-2.
Seniors
Jordan Krug and
Timmy Brooks paced the Blue and White, netting three goals each. Krug also added a pair of assists. Junior
Jakob Klein matched Brooks' three points, tallying two goals and a helper.
Senior goaltender
Riley White earned the victory after recording 12 saves. Juniors
Tommy DeLuca and
Robert Cressman anchored the defensive effort. DeLuca paired a career high six caused turnovers with four ground balls, while Cressman forced three Lynchburg miscues.
Sophomore
Luke McCallion went 9-18 at the faceoff spot, scooping three ground balls.
Lynchburg opened the scoring, but its lead lasted just seconds, as Klein evened the score just 31 seconds later. The junior put the Cavaliers ahead with his second goal at the 4:12 mark of the opening quarter.
The Blue and White looked to carry its lead into the second frame, but surrendered a goal with nine seconds left in the stanza, leveling the score after 15 minutes.
Cabrini took control of the action in the second quarter, as a goal by junior
Tyler Kostack sparked the Cavaliers on a 5-0 run. Krug, Brooks and classmate
Bill Morgan also marked the scoring column, as Cabrini pushed its lead to 7-2 with 4:40 left until the half.
The Hornets did not go away, netting a pair of goals before the break, pulling within 7-4 after 30 minutes.
The three goal cushion proved to be important, as both teams alternated goals in the second half, each netting two goals in the third and fourth quarters.
Kevin Rogers led the home team, pairing three goals and two assists, while Evan Lombardo added a hat trick. Craig Koester went 12-21 at the faceoff spot and scooped six ground balls. Goaltender Patrick Cornelius matched White with 12 saves in the loss.
The Cavaliers will continue their three game road trip on Tuesday, when they visit Hampden-Sydney College (3-1). The opening faceoff is scheduled or 4pm in Hampden-Sydney, VA.
