RADNOR, PA – The Cabrini men's lacrosse team remained undefeated, as it scored a 14-6 victory over the previously unbeaten Whittier College Poets today at Edith Robb Dixon Field.
With the win, the No. 6 Cavaliers improved to 7-0, the team's best start since going 11-0 to open the 2014 campaign. The loss marked the first of the season after six victories for the Poets.
Seven Cavaliers marked the scoring column in today's victory, with seniors
Nicholas Waligurski and
Bill Morgan leading the way with three goals and an assist each.
Juniors
Tyler Kostack and
Jakob Klein joined freshman
Konner Caplin with a pair of goals. Junior
Robert Cressman paired a goal and a helper, while sophomore
Luke McCallion added a single tally.
Senior
Riley White collected his seventh victory of the season after posting eight saves, while junior
Tommy DeLuca and sophomore
Kyle Myers combined for five caused turnovers. DeLuca also collected seven ground balls, two more than Waligurski, McCallion and senior
Sean Wagner.
The Blue and White built an early lead, as Klein and Cressman netted unassisted goals in the game's first five minutes. The Poets evened the score midway through the opening frame, but Kostack's man-up goal with 2:06 to play gave the home squad a slim lead after the first quarter.
The Cavaliers took control of the game in the second period, outscoring the Poets 5-0.
A pair of Caplin goals opened frame, with Klein and Kostack extending the lead. Klein hit Waligurski in the final second of the half, sending Cabrini into the halftime break with an 8-2 lead.
Whittier briefly interrupted the scoring run with the first goal of the third period, but the Cavaliers responded with four unanswered goals.
Morgan and McCallion scored in a nine second span, before Morgan complete his hat trick with two goals in 46 seconds. Waligurski added his second goal in the final minutes of the third, extending the Blue and White cushion to 13-4 with 15 minutes to play.
The Cavaliers offset a season-high 20 turnovers with 57 shots, among its highest outputs of the season. The club's 31 shots on goal, 43 ground balls and 13 caused turnovers also ranked among its best performances of the campaign.
Junior Nate Heritage led Whittier (6-1) with two goals, while freshman Ronan Dooney added two helpers. Senior goaltender Dakota Turgeon was masterful in the Poets' cage, recording 17 saves in the loss.
The Cavaliers have a few days to get healthy and rested before a Friday night showdown at No. 5 York (PA) (6-1). Game time is slated for 7pm.
