RADNOR, PA – The No. 7 ranked Cabrini men's lacrosse team found its offensive rhythm early and never looked, as the Cavaliers cruised to a 17-5 win over No. 13 Ithaca today at Edith Robb Dixon Field.
With today's victory, the Blue and White improved to 5-0, while handing the Bombers their first loss of the season.
At halftime of today's action, the Cavaliers honored member of its first varsity men's lacrosse team, as members of the team returned to celebrate the program's 25th anniversary.
Twelve Cavaliers marked the scoring column in today's victory, with senior
Nicholas Waligurski leading the way with five points on three goals and two assists. Juniors
Mike Gerzabek,
Tyler Kostack and
Jakob Klein added two goals each.
Senior
Jordan Krug matched Waligurski with a pair of assists, as the Cavaliers notched 10 helpers on its 17 goals.
Senior goaltender
Riley White anchored the Blue and White defensive effort, notching nine saves and five ground balls. Junior
Tommy DeLuca caused three turnovers, one more than junior
RJ Wolf, and scooped four ground balls. Sophomore
Evan Trizonis and
Kyle Tucker also scooped three ground balls each.
Sophomore
Luke McCallion provided a spark to the Cabrini attack, going 9-14 from the faceoff X with five ground balls.
Krug got the Cavaliers off on the right foot, as the senior posted three points in the game's first four minutes on a goal and two assists. The senior hit Waligurski and classmate
Bill Morgan for goals, before converting a pass from junior
Drew Hanna into a 3-0 lead at the 11:37 mark. A Klein tally late in the opening frame game the Blue and White a 4-1 lead after 15 minutes of action.
Ithaca pulled within 4-2 midway through the period, but Cabrini responded with a five of the next six goals over the final seven minutes of the half. Gerzabek scored twice in a 32 second span before sophomore
Nick Werner and Hanna marked the scoring column.
The Cavaliers added a spark at the halftime buzzer, as White recorded a save and hit Klein with a long pass, that the junior converted into a goal just before the buzzer, sending the Blue and White into the halftime break with a 9-3 cushion.
The Blue and White's offensive run continued into the third quarter, as it outscored the Bombers 6-0, including two goals each by Waligurski and Kostack.
Sophomore
Griffin Shira and freshman
Konner Caplin closed the Cavaliers' scoring with fourth quarter goals.
Junior Dan Lee led Ithaca (2-1) with two goals, while senior Josh Della Puca notched a pair of assists. Sophomore Jake Hall-Goldman paired three caused turnovers and was one of five Bombers to secure four ground balls. Freshman goaltender Connor Thornton recorded nine saves in the loss.
The Cavaliers will return to action on Wednesday, when they host Ohio Wesleyan University (2-3). Game time is set for 3:30 at Edith Robb Dixon Field.
