MADISON, NJ - The Cabrini field hockey team battled, but was ultimately edged 4-3 by the Ithaca College Bombers on Friday evening.
Ithaca opened the scoring just six minutes into the game thanks to a one-timer off the stick of Morgan Mullen. Just eight minutes later the Bombers doubled their lead after Grace Ziehnert corralled her own rebound from the right side and squeezed the ball past senior keeper
Noelia Ramirez.
Freshman
Olivia Sims opened the second quarter with a blast from the top of the circle to pull the Cavaliers back to within one. Three minutes later sophomore
Kaitlyn Martin found the back of the net off a penalty stroke to even the score at two a piece.
The Bombers would respond just before the intermission, however, as Mullen tallied her second goal of the day off a pass from the right side to take a 3-2 lead.
Ithaca capped their scoring just four minutes after the break as Kristen Rafferty notched an unassisted tally to give the hosts a 4-2 cushion.
Senior Brittany Morello answered for the Blue and White less than two minutes later to trim the Bombers lead to 4-3, but unfortunately that's as close as the Cavs would come.
In total, Ithaca held a 20-6 advantage in shots, including a 15-4 advantage in shots on goal. Ramirez posted a career high with 10 saves on the day, while Morello paced the Cavalier offense with a goal and two shots. Junior
Trisha Billig and freshman
Maura Tumelty rounded out the Cavaliers to mark the shot column with on each.
Following today's game the Blue and White move to 0-1 on the young season, but will look to even their record tomorrow, August 31st when they take on The Sage Colleges in Madison, NJ. Game time is slated for 5:45pm.
