MADISON, NJ – Freshman
Maura Tumelty made the most of her first two collegiate points today, recording both in the final six minutes of today's 3-2 win over Sage at the Drew University Fall Festival.
Trailing 2-1 with less than two minutes left in regulation, the rookie found senior
Katie Heck to even the score at 2-2. Heck's first goal of the season came just 40 seconds after Sage took a 2-1 lead.
Cabrini's defensive effort held firm in the game's final seconds, as the Blue and White fought off a penalty corner and shot in the final 65 seconds to send the game to overtime.
The Cavaliers took advantage of the only scoring chance in overtime, as freshman
Olivia Sims dribbled into the teeth of the Sage defense before finding Tumelty for the game-winning goal.
Cabrini outshot Sage 21-11, including 9-0 in the first quarter, but managed just one goal, a seventh minute tally by junior
Trisha Billig. The Cavaliers also forced nine penalty corners, including five in the opening 15 minutes, to just four for Sage.
Tunmelty accounted for seven of Cabrini's 21 shots, with Heck and Sims adding four each, one more than Billig.
Senior goaltender
Noelia Ramirez was solid in goal, posting seven saves, with six coming in the third and fourth quarters.
Micalli Johnston and Emily Schnoop scored the goals for Sages (0-2), while goaltender Abigayle Greier posted nine saves in the loss.
The Cavaliers will return to action on Wednesday, when they make the short trip to Haverford College. The opening whistle will blow at 5pm.
