Volleyball Can't Ground the Ospreys

RADNOR, PA – Despite being tied at 20 in the first two sets and making a late comeback in the third, the Cabrini volleyball team could not solve the Stockton University attack, as the Cavaliers suffered a 3-0 (25-22, 25-22, 25-19) loss to the Ospreys tonight at Nerney Field House.

Prior to tonight's action, the Cavaliers honored junior Steph Judkins, who became the sixth player in program history to record 1,000 career kills in last week's victory over Washington & Jefferson.

With tonight's output, Judkins moves into third place on the program's all-time list with 1,063 kills, just 80 kill shy of Danielle Carrozza's record of 1,143.

Senior Katrina Shelly paced the Blue and white (4-3) with 11 kills and eight digs, while Judkins added nine kills and six digs.

Sophomore Amelia Ballard and freshman Melanie Cotes-Rivera combined for 25 assists and 13 digs. Fellow sophomore Gina Custer chipped in with a team-high 14 digs.

The Ospreys built a slim lead in the opening frame, but the Cavaliers kept the score close. After trailing by as many as four points, Cabrini battled back tying the score seven times during the set. The final deadlock came at 22.

Stockton Junior Julie Kohloff broke the tie with one of her five kills, before classmate Charlotte Leon ended the set.

The second set started much like the first, with the visitors building an early slim lead, but the Cavaliers fought back to take a 12-9 lead midway through the frame. Neither team could grab control of the momentum, as the frame featured 11 ties and four lead changes.

With the score tied at 21, Stockton rattled off conseucitve points to establish a 23-21 lead. Cotes-Rivera found sophomore Hannah Dalton for a kill to stop the Ospreys' spurt, but back to back kills by Leon and senior Jocelyn Holobetz gave Stockton a 2-0 lead.

Stockton took control of the third set, as it used a 14-6 run to turn an early 5-4 cushion into a 19-10 advantage. The Cavalier, however, would not go away, as they responded with an 8-2 run of their own, to pull within 21-18.

Unfortunately, the Blue and White would get no closer, as Stockton took advantage of three late Cabrini attack errors to close the night's action
.
Holobetz led Stockton (7-1) with nine kills, while Leon paired eight kills and four block assists. Junior Emily Sullivan added 27 assists, while senior Natalie Miller recorded a match-high 17 digs.

The road gets no easier for the Cavaliers as they will head to Grantham, PA for this weekend's Messiah Invitational.  Cabrini will face Christopher Newport (2-5) on Friday night before facing the host Falcons (6-0), and No. 2 Calvin (6-0) on Saturday.
