RADNOR, PA – The Cabrini volleyball team suffered a pair of tough losses at today's tri-match at Nerney Field House. The Blue and White could not hold a late lead in a five set loss to Stockton, before battling back but falling to SUNY Cortland in the nightcap.
Stockton 3, Cabrini 2 (23-25, 28-26, 20-25, 25-21, 15-13)
For the second time this season, the Cavaliers and Ospreys needed five sets to find a winner. Unfortunately for the Blue and White, it held a lead midway through the fifth and deciding set, but could not close the deal.
After dropping the fourth set, the Cavaliers built an early 6-2 lead in the fifth after a kill by senior
Victoria Camacho. Cabrini maintained its four point at 11-7 after back to back kills by senior
Hannah Dalton and sophomore
Lily Baynum.
With their backs against the way, the Ospreys found some rhythm, rattling off five consecutive points to take a 12-11 lead. Junior
Morgan Mendick's kill interrupted the visitor's spurt, but a Stockton kill and double block gave the Ospreys match point. The Cavaliers fought off one point, but could not even the score to extend the match.
Dalton paired a career high 30 kills and 10 digs in the Cavaliers' loss to the Ospreys. Classmate
Gina Custer also had a career effort with 38 digs.
Freshman
Sam Heenan joined Dalton with a double-double, notching 12 kills and 11 digs. Senior
Lexi Conte and sophomore
Melanie Cotes-Rivera combined for 52 assists, with each notching seven digs.
SUNY Cortland 3, Cabrini 1 (21-25, 25-17, 25-12, 25-22)
The Blue and White looked to rally in the nightcap. After trailing for much of the opening frame, Cabrini rallied late to secure the first set victory. Down 20-18, the Cavaliers seven of the last eight points to take the first set.
The Cavaliers could not duplicate the effort in the second set, pairing 12 kills against eight attack errors. The Red Dragons seized control of the action in the third, recording kills on 17 of its 25 points in the third frame.
Cabrini looked to extend the match in the fourth, building an 11-7 lead on back to back kills by Mendick and Dalton. Cortland answered to the tune of a 12-4 run to build a 19-15 advantage. Despite its best efforts, the Cavaliers could not cut into the deficit.
Once again, Dalton paced the Blue and White attack with 17 kills, while Heenan added to her double-double total with 11 kills and 12 digs. Custer added 33 digs, while Conte directed the offense to the tune of 25 assists.
The Blue and White will return to Atlantic East Conference play on Wednesday, when they visit Neumann. First serve is slated for 7pm in Aston, PA.
