Field Hockey Tops Gwynedd Mercy, Returns to Title Game

RADNOR, PA – The Cabrini field hockey team secured its spot in Saturday's Atlantic East Conference championship game after today's 2-0 win over Gwynedd Mercy.

The Cavaliers visit number one seed St. Mary's (MD) in Saturday's title tilt, the Blue and White's first championship game appearance since 2017. The Seahawks stopped number four seed Marywood 3-0 in today's other semifinal game.

The Blue and White wasted little time in grabbing a lead, as senior Kaitlyn Martin found sophomore Caroline Gallagher on a penalty corner in the game's fifth minute. The sophomore's 13th marker of the campaign gave the Cavaliers all of the breathing room they needed.

Cabrini's defensive effort never allowed the visitors to find their rhythm, as the Griffins were held without a shot or a penalty corner.

After recording just four shots and four corners in the first half, the Blue and White turned up its pressure after the break, tallying 11 of its 15 shots and six corners after the break.

Cabrini held on to a slim 1-0 lead until the 58th minute, when sophomore Daly Ewing converted a rebound into her sixth goal of the season.

Gallagher led the Blue and White with seven shots on the day, while freshman goaltender Courtney Keith earned her fourth shutout of the season.

The Cavaliers will face a familiar foe in Saturday's championship game, as Cabrini suffered a 2-1 loss at St. Mary's on Oct. 28.

Cabrini struggled to find its offense in the first half, as it failed to record a shot in the opening 20 minutes. The Seahawks took advantage, netting goals in the first and second quarters. The Cavaliers found their flow in the second half, outshooting the home side 9-4, including a 59th minute goal.
