ST. MARY'S CITY, MD – Two years ago to the day, the Cabrini field hockey team left the field after a tough 2-1 loss at Marywood in the semifinal round of the Atlantic East Tournament. The loss completed a 3-16 season, among the worst in program history.
Today, the Cavaliers walked off the field at St. Mary's College of MD as Atlantic East champions, as the Cavaliers scored a 2-1 double-overtime victory over the top seeded Seahawks.
The win marks the fifth championship in program history and its first since 2016.
The Cavaliers fell behind in the early minutes of today's championship tilt, as Kate Stevens found the back of the cage less than three minutes after the opening whistle on the side's only shot of the first quarter.
Despite trailing 1-0, the Blue and White defense stood strong, holding SMC to just two first half shots and one penalty corner. Unfortunately, the Cavaliers could not take advantage on the offensive side of the pitch, as just one of its four first half shot attempts found the target.
The Cavaliers found some rhythm in the third quarter, outshooting the Seahawks 5-4 and forcing four penalty corners, but could not find the right scoring connection.
The pressure pair off in the 48
th minute when graduate student
Shannon Agnew scored her second career goal.
Both sides pressed to gain a late advantage on the scoreboard, as the teams combined for 10 shots and five penalty corners in the final 15 minute period, but the score remained tied as the game went into overtime.
SMC created several scoring chances in the first extra 10 minute period, but a 64
th minute defensive save by freshman Sarah Hussey and a 67
th minute stop by freshman goaltender
Courtney Keith kept the game tied.
The Cavaliers returned the favor in the second extra period, as senior
Allison Martin forced a pair of SMC saves in the opening 90 seconds of the period. Cabrini never let up its pressure, firing five shots in the second overtime.
With the game set to head to a shootout at the end of the second extra period, the Blue and White put an end to the action. With just 47 seconds left on the clock, sophomore
Caroline Gallagher sent a ball into the center of the goal area, where it found freshman
Adrianna Jones on the far post for the game winning marker.
Gallagher led the Cavaliers with eight of their 17 shots, while Jones added three, one more than Martin and junior
Olivia Sims.
Keith earned Most Valuable Player honors after recording three saves.
