RADNOR, PA – It had been four days short of one year since the Cabrini men's lacrosse team saw game action, but the No. 4 Cavaliers shook off their collective rust to score a 17-15 win over the Southern Virginia Knights today at Edith Robb Dixon Field.
Seven Cavaliers (1-0) marked the scoring column in the victory, Senior
Ty Kostack and junior
Kyle Tucker led the way with five points each.
Senior
Matt LoParo matched Kostack with four goals, becoming just the 16th player in program history to record 100 goals. Classmate
Drew Supinski added three goals in the victory.
Senior
Tommy DeLuca also etched his name in the Blue and White record book, as his six ground balls too him beyond the 200 plateau for his career, just the fifth time in program history the mark has been reached.
Fellow senior
Eric Carr tallied a game high six caused turnovers, while classmate
Bobby Cressman paired three caused turnovers and five ground balls.
Freshman goaltender
Matt Sageder collected six saves, while junior
Matthew Ries went 14-19 at the faceoff x.
Cabrini wasted little time finding its offensive rhythm, as Tucker put the home side on the board less than 100 seconds into the action. LoParo, Kostack and senior
Mike Gerzabek marked the scoring column, as the Cavaliers pushed their lead to 4-0 with five minutes left in the first. A Supinski marker late in the period pushed Cabrini's lead to 5-1 before the Knights made their first comeback of the day.
Senior Zach Danneman scored two goals in the final 40 seconds of the first quarter and added another early in the second, as Southern VA evened the score at 5-5. Both teams alternated goals throughout the second half, as the game went into the halftime break tied at 7-7.
Statistically, the Cavaliers seemed to be in control, outshooting the Knights 34-18 in the first half and committing just three turnovers to 12 for the visitors, but junior netminder Dalon Hampshire kept Southern Virginia in the game with 12 first half saves.
The Blue and White regained its mojo during the break, as the home team erupted for six consecutive goals to open the third quarter. Supinski and LoParo netted two goals each during the run, while senior
Jake Klein and freshman
Max Drift also found the back of the net.
Once again, Southern VA had an answer. The Knights responded with six straight goals of their own, including a pair of man-up markers to even the score at 13 with 60 seconds remaining in the third quarter.
Kostack broke the deadlock with his third goal of the afternoon game with just 26 seconds to play in the period. Tucker's man-up goal five minutes into the final frame pushed Cabrini's lead to 15-13. Another Knights' goal cut Cabrini's advantage in half, but late goals by LoParo and Kostack extended the cushion to 17-14 with 3:33 to play.
The Blue and White outshot the Knights (1-4) 73-31 on the day, including 20-5 in the deciding fourth quarter. The Cavaliers also pressured the visitors into 22 turnovers and held Southern VA to just 12-19 clear attempts.
Danneman joined classmate Tennison Schmidt and Ty Veres with six points each, while fellow senior Chandler Wescott added four assists. Hampshire finished the night with 21 saves in the loss.
The Cavaliers will have just over a week to prepare for their next contest, as the Blue and White will visit Montclair State University on Sunday, March 14. The opening faceoff is slated for 12 noon in Montclair, NJ.
