Field Hockey Falls to Swarthmore in OT

SWARTHMORE, PA - The Cavaliers struggled to find their offense, but erased a late 2-0 lead to force overtime, before succumbing to Swarthmore 3-2.

The Garnet grabbed the lead midway through the first quarter before extending their lead in the 13th minute. Cabrini mustered just two shots in the first half, as the home side carried its 2-0 cushion into the halftime break.

The Cavaliers created a few more chances in the third, forcing three penalty corners, but could only convert one into a shot.

While Cabrini could not find its offensive mojo, its defensive effort was remained strong. After surrendering two goals on seven shots in the first period, the visitors held Swarthmore to just four shots and two penalty corners in the second and third frames.

The Cavaliers turned up their pressure in the fourth quarter and it paid off in the 48th minute, as senior Allison Martin found junior Olivia Sims for the Blue and White's first goal of the evening.

Less than 90 seconds later, Martin etched her name on the score sheet, as her 49th minute unassisted marker evened the score with just 10 minutes remaining in regulation.

Cabrini then turned to its defense, as both teams looked for a possible game winning goal. The Cavaliers fought off five penalty corners in over the final 10 minutes to send the game into overtime.

Just shy of three minutes into the extra period, the Garnet recorded the only shot of overtime to secure the victory.

Cabrini recorded just six shots on the night, with sophomore Caroline Gallagher accounting for three, while Swarthmore attempted 15. The Blue and White defensive effort also defended 18 penalty corners, with freshman goaltender Courtney Keith notching five saves.

The Cavaliers (4-4) will return to Edith Robb Dixon Field on Saturday, when they play host to No. 10 Rowan. The opening whistle is scheduled for 12 noon.
