RADNOR, PA - The Cabrini volleyball team returned to the win column tonight with a 3-0 victory over Penn State Berks in a match that saw the Cavaliers rally late in the first and second sets.
Senior
Hannah Dalton paced the Blue and White (3-9) attack with 15 kills, while classmate
Lexi Conte paired 15 assists and 10 digs. Sophomore
Melanie Cotes-Rivera added 12 helpers. Senior
Gina Custer and freshman
Sam Heenan chipped in with 10 digs each, with sophomore
Lily Baynum totaling four blocks.
The Cavaliers struggled to find their collective rhythm in the first set, trailing 10-5 early in the action. The home side continued to fight, using a 4-0 run to even the score at 17 on a service ace from freshman
Jessie Donovan. Penn State Berks quickly regained the lead, but Cabrini evened the score at 18, 19 and 21.
The Nittany Lions responded with back to back points, establishing a late 23-21 advantage, but the Cavaliers capitalized on three consecutive Penn State Berks' errors before Cotes-Rivera's service ace closed the set.
The second set started much like the first, with the Blue and White dropping the match's first four points. While Cabrini kept the Nittany Lions within reach, it could not secure a lead on the score board. Trailing 21-19 late in the frame, a Dalton kill changed the momentum.
The senior's kill sparked a 6-0 Cavaliers' run, a spurt punctuated by a block by Baynum and junior
Morgan Mendick that secured the 25-23 set victory. Â
The Cavaliers carried the momentum from the second set comeback into the final frame, using a 6-1 run to build a 13-8 advantage it would not relinquish. While the visitors tried to stay close, Cabrini used a 7-2 spurt to establish an insurmountable 22-15 lead.
Cassie Shoupe led Penn State Berks (6-7) with 13 kills, while Julia Rathsam added 30 assists and eight digs.Â
The Cavaliers will return to action on Saturday, when they host Rowan and Hunter for a tri-match. Cabrini will face Rowan at 11am and Hunter at 3pm, with Rowan and Hunter meeting at 1pm.
