Volleyball Splits 2 Matches at Home Tri-Match

RADNOR, PA – The Cabrini volleyball team split a pair of matches today at Nerney Field House, as it hosted Rowan University and Hunter College for a tri-match.

The Cavaliers suffered a tightly contested 3-1 (15-25, 25-17, 25-18, 25-20) loss to the Profs, before rebounding with a 3-0 (27-25, 25-13, 25-21) victory over the Hawks, moving their record to 4-10 on the season.

Senior Hannah Dalton and freshman Sam Heenan paced the Cavaliers in the Rowan loss, each recording double-doubles. The senior paired a match-high 19 kills with 18 digs, while the rookie added 12 kills and 18 digs.

Sophomore Melanie Cotes-Rivera added a double dip as well with 16 assists and 12 digs. Seniors Lexi Conte and Gina Custer chipped in with 17 assists and 22 digs, respectively.

The Blue and White used a 12-4 run midway through the opening set to build a commanding 16-10 lead and claimed five of the last six points to capture the opening set.

The home side could not continue its momentum into the second set, as Rowan took control early, taking a 14-4 lead. Trailing 19-7, Cabrini made a late run to pull within 23-17 but the deficit proved to be too much to overcome.

Cabrini broke away in a tightly contested third set with a 6-0 run to take a 15-11 lead, but Rowan answered with four straight of its own to even the score at 15. Just minutes later, with Cabrini holding a slim 18-16 lead, the Profs put he set away, scoring the nine points of the frame.

Like the third set, both team used runs in the fourth set to keep the score tight. The Cavaliers' final spurt was a 4-0 run that pulled them to within 19-18, but they could get no closer, as Rowan scored four of the final five points to end the action.

Once again, it was Dalton who led the Blue and White to victory in the nightcap, pairing 21 kills and 14 digs for her eighth double-double of the season. Cotes-Rivera notched 22 helpers, while Custer added 23 digs.

An 8-1 run midway through the first set gave the home team a seeming comfortable 19-11 lead, but the Hawks would not go quietly. The Hawks chipped away at their deficit, pulling to within 23-22 before three consecutive kills handed the visitors a set point at 25-24. The Cavaliers then turned to Dalton, who responded with three straight kills of her own to close the frame.

The Cavaliers carried their momentum in the second set, building an early 15-3 lead and never looking back.

Cabrini established another early lead in the third set, leading 10-2 and 20-9, but again the Hawks continued to fight. Hunter fought off seven match points, before Cabrini freshman Makenzie Griffith's kill ended the day's action.

The Cavaliers will return to action on Tuesday, when they welcome Immaculata to Nerney Field House in the Atlantic East Conference opener for both clubs. First serve is slated for 7pm.
