CHAMPS! Field Hockey wins second Atlantic East Championship crown with 3-0 win over St. Mary's of Maryland

ST. MARY'S CITY, Md. – The Cabrini University field hockey won its second straight Atlantic East Conference Championship, capturing the 2022 title with a 3-0 win over St. Mary's College of Maryland on Saturday afternoon.

The Cavaliers won their sixth conference title in school history and will advance to the NCAA Tournament for the first time since 2016.

Cabrini held the Seahawks scoreless for only the second time all season.

Junior midfielder Caroline Gallagher had two goals and an assist, scoring unassisted in the 24th minute and on an assist from junior midfielder Daly Ewing in the 28th minute. The other goal came at 5:07 off of pass from Gallagher to freshman forward Maggie Cella in the sixth minute.

From there, the defensive unit took over. The Cavs were led by senior defender Maura Tumelty, who was named as the MVP. Sophomore goalkeeper benefited from the efforts of the defensive unit, as she made seven saves on the day. The Seahawks were held to just two shots in the first half.

For St. Mary's, Kaley Christman had two saves.

In addition to winning the championship, senior defender Erin Agnew was named as the Elite 20 Winner by the conference. The Elite 20 honors the student-athlete with the highest GPA at the championship. Agnew has a 3.97 GPA, majoring in criminal justice.

Cabrini will find out its opponent late Sunday night during the NCAA.com selection show.
