Colfer Scores 300th Win as #8 Cavaliers Top Haverford in 2022 Opener

RADNOR, PA – The Cavaliers scored three goals in a 3:38 of the fourth quarter to pull away from the visiting Haverford Fords, as the Cabrini men's lacrosse team opened the 2022 season with a 10-6 win.

The victory also marked the 300th career win for head coach Steve Colfer. The win propels Colfer into a an elite club, he becomes just the 22nd coach in NCAA Div. I, II and III history to reach the mark.

The Cavaliers accounted for the team's scoring today, as junior Mikey Vanaman and sophomore Tommy Vaughn tallied four goals each, while junior Dan Bennett paired two goals and two assists.

Fellow junior Dillon McManus matched Bennet with two helpers, with seniors Evan Trizonis and Matt Hughes adding one each.

Graduate student Matt Nestler returned to the Blue and White cage, posting 12 saves in the win. Senior Zack Kaut and junior Kyle Kutyla anchored the defensive effort, combining for seven caused turnovers, with Kaut securing six ground balls.

Senior Jake Huey sparked the attack fro the faceoff spot, winning 12 of his 20 chances with seven ground balls. Nestler added five ground balls, one more than Vanaman.

The Cavaliers wasted little time cracking open the season's scorebook, as Bennet found Vanaman just 64 seconds in to the game. The lead was short-lived, however, as the Fords responded with back to back markers over the next three minutes.

Cabrini evened the score on Bennet's first goal of the season at the 8:57 mark, before Hughes and Vanaman connected on a long pass to give the Blue and White a 3-2 lead after the first quarter.

The Fords responded in the second quarter, notching back to back goals to regain the lead at 4-3 with 5:49 left in the period.

Once again, Bennet leveled the score with his second goal of the afternoon, sparking the Cavaliers on a run of four unanswered goals. Just 43 seconds after Bennet's goal, Vaughn netted his first of the season, sending Cabrini into the halftime break with a 6-4 lead.

The Blue and White's scoring run ran through the third quarter, with Vaughn and Vanaman marking the scoring column. Meanwhile, the Cabrini defense kept the Fords scoreless during the period, with Nestler recording seven of his saves.

Haverford won the opening faceoff of the fourth quarter and scored led than 10 seconds into frame and added another marker at the 12:05 mark, pulling to within 7-6.

The Cavaliers regained the game's momentum midway through the final period, as Vaugn's third goal pushed the lead back to two goals. The sophomore added another marker with 4:38 to play, with Vanaman's fourth tally sealing the victory one minute later.

Junior Andrew Arth led the Fords with two goals and an assist, while freshman goaltender Colby Freeman stopped 13 shots in the loss.

The Cavaliers will hit the road next weekend, as they will visit No. 6 Lynchburg (2-0) on Saturday. The opening faceoff is scheduled for 1pm in Lynchburg, VA.
