Men's Lacrosse Stumbles at No. 5 Lynchburg

LYNCHBURG, VA – A 15 minute span of the second and third quarters proved to be the difference today, as the No. 8 Cabrini men's lacrosse team suffered a 15-9 loss at No. 5 Lynchburg.

The Cavaliers got off to a great start, as senior faceoff specialist Jake Huey won the opening draw and opened the scoring 31 seconds into the action. Junior Mikey Vanaman doubled the lead two minutes later.

Sophomore Max Drift scored the first of his two goals on the day in the final minute of the opening period to give the Cavaliers a 3-1 lead after 15 minutes.

Following an early Lynchburg goal, Vanaman netted a pair of goals in a 15 second span to give the Blue and White a 5-2 lead with 10 minutes left in the second quarter when the game got away. The Hornets scored the game's next eight goals and 12 of the next 13 to take control of the action.  

Lynchburg tallied three goals in a 90 second span of the second to take a 6-5 lead into the halftime break. The Hornets added to its lead early in the third with another three goals in 90 seconds.

Sophomore Max Drift briefly stopped the Lynchburg scoring run at the 8:47 mark of the third, but the home side responded with the game's next four goals.

Vanaman led the Blue and White with three goals, while freshman Jake Schneider paired a goal and two helpers. Huey added a goal and an assist to his 12 faceoff wins and seven ground balls.

Graduate student Matt Nestler suffered the loss despite pairing 12 saves and nine ground balls. Senior Zack Kaut caused a pair of turnovers, with junior Peter Hewitt securing three ground balls.

The Blue and White's 25 shots today mark the club's fewest since recording 25 in an 11-9 loss to Nazareth on March22, 2015, while its -18 shot disparity marks the clubs largest since being outshot 42-22 in a 15-11 loss to Salisbury on April 11, 2014.

Dylan Wolfe led Lynchburg with six points on four goals and two assists, while Ryan Kennedy added four markers. Goaltender Patrick Moore tallied eight saves to secure the victory.

The Cavaliers will look to return to the win column on Saturday, when they visit Hampden-Sydney College. The opening faceoff is slated for 3:30pm in Hampden-Sydney, VA.
