No. 10 Men's Lacrosse Rides 1st Quarter Scoring to Victory

HAMPDEN-SYDNEY, VA – The No. 10 Cavaliers tallied six first quarter goals and road their hot start to an 8-6 victory at Hamdpen-Sydney College this afternoon.

The Blue and White offense found its rhythm in the opening minutes, scoring three goals in a 19 second span early in the first.

Junior Austin Bolton opened the scoring with an unassisted goal just over two minutes after the opening faceoff. Senior Jake Huey won the ensuing draw and scored his second goal of the season 12 seconds later. The Cavaliers player make it, take it, as
Huey claimed another faceoff victory and found junior Dillon McManus for a third marker at the 12:38 mark.

HSC snapped the scoring run with a man-up goal, but Cabrini regained its three goal cushion on the first of junior Griffin Ganster's two goals on the day.

The Cavaliers closed the opening on 15 minute period on a high note, as sophomore Bryan Rafferty and Ganster marked the scoring column in the final two minutes of the quarter, extending Cabrini's lead to 6-2 enter the second quarter.

McManus found his way back to the score sheet midway through the second quarter, as the Cavaliers carried a 7-4 lead into the halftime break.

Both defenses stood firm in the third quarter, as the teams combined for 11 saves on 17 shots in the frame. Only the final shot of the quarter found its target, as HSC pulled to within 7-5 on a goal with two seconds remaining in the third.

The home team again navigated the Blue and White defense, pulling to within 7-6 with 11:30 to play, but senior Evan Trizonis found McManus for his third goal with 9:55 left, extending the lead back to two goals.

Cabrini then turned back to a stingy defense effort, that held the Tigers to just two shots on target and forced four turnovers over the game's final 9:45.

Graduate student Matt Nestler anchored the defensive effort with 14 saves, while senior Matt Hughes caused a pair of turnovers. Huey dominated the faceoff spot, winning 12 of 15 chances with 11 ground balls to go with a goal and a helper.

Sean Duffy, Bobby Clagett and Talmadge Hope scored two goals each for the Tigers, while Will Perry notched 24 saves, including 14 in the second half.

The Cavaliers will play their third consecutive road game on Saturday, when they visit No. 16 Dickinson. The opening faceoff is slated for 12pm in Carlisle, PA.
