#12 Cavaliers Secure AEC Final Berth with 22-2 Win over Griffins

RADNOR,PA – The #12 Cavaliers will make their 21st consecutive conference championship appearance on Saturday, after rolling to a 22-2 win over Gwynedd Mercy in tonight's Atlantic East Conference Tournament semifinal game at Edith Robb Dixon Field.

The top seeded Cavaliers will host number two seed Marymount in Saturday's championship game. The game time has not yet been determined.

Five Cavaliers recorded multiple goals in tonight's victory, led by junior Mikey Vanaman, who paired four goals and seven ground balls. Classmate Dillon McManus added three goals, two assists, four ground balls and two caused turnovers.

Freshman Zack Riegler matched McManus with a career best three goals, while senior Jake Huey and freshman Jake Schneider added two goals each.

Huey was one of the keys to Cabrini's offensive dominance, as the senior contributes seven of the Cavaliers' 20 faceoff wins. Sophomore John McCormick went 11-14 at the X, securing seven ground balls.

The Blue and White also put on a stingy defensive effort, holding the Griffins to just 21 shots. Seniors Matt Hughes and Zack Kaut matched McManus and classmate Blake Turnier with two caused turnovers, as Cabrini pressured the visitors into 29 miscues.

Three Cabrini goaltenders saw action in the victory, with graduate student Matt Nestler posting four saves in 45 minutes of work to earn the victory. Junior Rob Farrington stopped all three shots he saw in his 7:31.

The Blue and White grabbed an early lead, as Vanaman and McManus connected for the game's first goal just 73 seconds into the action. Gwynedd Mercy sophomore Nick Flamma evened the game three minutes later.

The Griffins could not continue momentum, as Huey won the ensuing faceoff and scored 10 seconds later, spurring a run of 19 unanswered goals. Six Cavaliers marked the scoring column in the first quarter, including two each from Huey and Vanaman, as junior Griffin Ganster's goal with 1.6 seconds left in the quarter gave Cabrini an 8-1 cushion.

The Blue and White lead swelled to 13-1 at the half, as Cabrini outshot the Griffins 42-7 in the opening 30 minutes.

All told, the Cavaliers saved one of their best statistical performances of the season for their postseason opener.  The team's 22 goals, 72 shots, 57 ground balls, 10 turnovers and 16 caused turnovers rank among the team's best outputs in each category.

Senior john McCreary joined Flamma on the Gwynedd Mercy score sheet, while senior goaltender Aubron Swartley notched 22 saves in the loss.

Marymount will make its first championship appearance after topping Neumann 19-11 today in Arlington, VA.  The Knights netted an early marker before the Saints rallied for four unanswered goals. Neumann lade a late first quarter comeback, slicing its deficit to 4-3 after 15 minutes of action.

The Saints put away any hopes of a comeback with four consecutive second quarter markers to build a 9-5 lead at the half. The Knights would get no closer over the game's final 30 minutes.

Gavin Taylorson led the Saints with 10 points on seven goals and three dimes, while four players added four points each. Dylan Staley controlled the faceoff spot, going 23-31 with 16 ground balls, while Brandon Hall posted 10 saves.

Cabrini scored a 15-3 victory over Marymount during the teams' regular season meeting on April 6. Despite getting off to a slow start offensively, the Cavaliers outshot the home side 52-25 and committed just 12 turnovers.

McManus and Vanaman led the club with four points each in the victory, while Kaut, Schneider and junior Austin Bolton provided two goals each. Junior Kyle Kutyla accounted for two of Cabrini's 11 caused turnovers, while Nestler dialed up 12 saves.

Troy Tangolics, Sebastian Radovic and Patrick Lee marked the scoring column for the Saints, while Staley won 12 of the game's 21 faceoffs and scooped nine ground balls. Hall suffered the loss despite recording 20 saves.
