Men's Lacrosse opens season with 18-6 win over Haverford

HAVERFORD, Pa. – The Cabrini University men's lacrosse team, ranked 14th nationally – started off the 2023 season on the right note as the Cavs (1-0) won the Main Line Derby over Haverford (0-1) 18-6 on Saturday afternoon.

Cabrini built a 10-3 lead at intermission and led by as much as 12 (16-4) going into the fourth quarter.

Dillon McManus had a game-high five goals and two assists for the Blue and White, with Jake Schneider adding in three goals and one assist on the day. Austin Bolton had two goals, as did Mikey Vanaman and Tommy Vaughan.

Connor Herraiz, joined Vanaman with three assists each, while Bolton joined McManus with two helpers.

At the X, Sam DiTrolio went an impressive 22-of-24, winning his first 18 faceoffs as Cabrini won 24 of the 26 faceoff opportunities on the day. DiTrolio had game-high 18 ground balls on the day.

Chris Porzelt had 13 saves as he allowed just six goals on 32 shots defensively, while scooping up four ground balls.

Cabrini started the game by scoring 37 seconds in as McManus scored at 14:23 for a 1-0 lead, while Schneider scored just ten seconds later to go up 2-0. McManus would then score back-to-back goals to go up 4-0, his last coming with 12:41 left in the first quarter on an assist from Bolton.

Haverford would get on the board as Matt Richards scored on a Reid Tietjen assist with 12:31 left, before Bolton and McManus would score back-to-back giving Cabrini a 6-1 lead.

Leading 6-3 after, Cabrini would put the game out of reach in the second quarter as they scored four straight goals in the span of 3:10 to go up 10-3. Mikey Vanaman scored two goals during that stretch, with Matt Vanaman and Tommy Vaughan also adding goals. Mikey Vanaman assisted on two goals during the stretch.

Schneider and Bolton opened the third quarter with goals to give the Cavs a 10-3 with 10:23 left.

Cabrini and Haverford would trade extra-man goals late in the third, as Vaughan scored on a Bolton assist with 1:55 left for a 13-4 lead. Vaughan's goal would be the first in a four goal run for Cabrini, capped by a score from McManus with 12:26 left on an assist from Herraiz.

Cabrini will open an eight-game homestand next Saturday, hosting The University of Lynchburg at noon.
