SCRANTON, Pa. – The Cabrini women's soccer season came to an end Wednesday in the Colonial States Athletic Conference (CSAC) semifinal round after a 1-1 tie resulted in 3-0 shootout victory in favor of top-seeded Marywood University.
The Cavaliers ended more than 37 minutes of scoreless play after freshman midfielder Sammy Thompson handed the visitors a 1-0 edge on an unassisted goal. Thompson ripped a shot past Pacers goalkeeper Meghan Coyle from 16-yards out.
The Cabrini defense held the Marywood offense in check for the ensuing 45 minutes. The Pacers knotted the scoring in the 84th minute following a goal from Lisa Hanselman. Hanselman corralled a loose ball in front of the Cavaliers' net before beating Cabrini goalkeeper Gianna Porretta.
The final six minutes played without a goal, forcing Cabrini's second overtime playoff game in as many outings. Porretta tallied three saves in regulation and was not challenged in either of the extra sessions.
The Cavaliers offense recorded four shots in the overtime periods, including three in the second 10-minute frame. However, Marywood held a 15-10 overall shot advantage for the game.
In penalty kicks, senior Nikki Duggan and senior Chrissy Regan had their two attempts stopped by Coyle. Down 2-0 after Tayler Simmons and Amanda Costello converted for Marywood, sophomore Dana Nardello's penalty kick try was unsuccessful, sending the shot wide right.
Kristin Powers' penalty kick goal in the third round clinched the win for the Pacers.
Marywood advances to play second-seeded Gwynedd-Mercy College in the CSAC Final Saturday.
Cabrini finishes the 2008 season with a 10-8-2 overall record.
