Volleyball Win Streak Ends at Five Matches, Drops 3-1 Decision at Widener University

The Cabrini volleyball team's five-match win streak ending Thursday with a 3-1 loss at Widener University.

CHESTER, Pa. –
The Cabrini volleyball team saw its season-best five-match win streak come to an end in a 3-1 loss at non-conference opponent Widener University Thursday night. Senior setter Lizzie Williams notched 38 assists for the Cavaliers in the loss.

Williams, named to Colonial States Athletic Conference (CSAC) Honor Roll Monday, paired her second-highest assists output of the season with eight digs and three kills. She posted a season-best 41 helpers in a 3-1 win against Wheaton College September 12.

Sophomore middle Beth Gillespie led the Cabrini attack on offense, recording a season-high 10 kills on 25 attempts against zero errors. Sophomore outside hitter Alexis Doss tallied 10 digs and nine kills.

Junior middle Stephanie Recklau and sophomore outside hitter Danielle Kulich each totaled seven kills.

Defensively, sophomore libero Courtney Abel collected a club-high 20 digs, reaching the 20-dig plateau for the sixth time this season and third time in the last four matches.

Freshman opposite Megan Ryan claimed 11 digs and six kills.

Widener grabbed a two-game lead on the Cavaliers with narrow 25-21 and 26-24 victories in sets one and two, respectively.

With its back against the wall, Cabrini forced a fourth game with a 25-19 triumph in the third stanza. However, the Pride closed out the match with a 25-19 win in the fourth set, capturing its third straight victory.

Devan Green recorded a team-best 16 kills in the victory for Widener. Jamie Ballew posted 45 assists and Meghan Spence notched 22 digs.

Cabrini (13-4, 5-0) resumes its non-conference schedule Friday, October 2 against Stevenson University as part of day one at the Franklin & Marshall College Tournament.
