CHESTER, Pa. – The Cabrini women's basketball squad opened its 2009-10 season Sunday at non-conference opponent Widener University. The Pride earned a 65-35 victory against the Cavaliers at the Schwartz Athletic Center. Senior guard Alyssa Brady posted a team-best 10 points in the loss.
Brady shot 2-for-5 from the 3-point line. She also grabbed a club-high six rebounds, swiped three steals and added two assists.
Senior point guard Deana DiAmico tallied nine points, three rebounds, three assists and two steals. Sophomore combo guard Laura Caron paired a career-best nine points with four boards, two steals and two blocked shots.
The Blue & White struggled to find an offensive rhythm in the first half, shooting just 14.8 percent from the field overall. Widener led the Cavaliers at the intermission, 28-11.
Cabrini found more success from the field in the second, shooting 31.8 percent from the field overall and 27.3 percent from long distance.
However, the Pride shot 52.2 percent from the field in the closing period, including 50 percent from the 3-point line.
Guard Kate Dellinger led Widener, scoring a team-high 14 points and collecting six rebounds. Guard Lil Carney and guard Francesca Lee each reached double figures with 10 points.
Sunday's contest marked the first in the career of first-year head coach Kate Pearson. Pearson assumes the heading coach responsibilities for the Cavaliers in 2009-10 following five seasons as an assistant coach with the Blue & White.
Cabrini (0-1) remains on the road and will play at Albright College Wednesday, November 18. Game time with the Lions is scheduled for 7 p.m.
