RADNOR, Pa. – The Cabrini University women's basketball team gets set to head to Arlington, Va. on Saturday, Feb. 25 for the Atlantic East Conference Championship as the Cavaliers square off against the No. 1-seeded Marymount Saints. Tip-off is set for 4 p.m.
RECAP
The Cavaliers finished the regular season with a 12-13 overall record but managed to go 8-4 in conference action and lock up the No. 3 seed, earning a home game for the quarterfinal round in which the Cavs topped Marywood 80-58. The 22-point win propelled the Cavs to the AEC semifinals where they faced Gwynedd Mercy. Back on Feb. 18, the Griffins spoiled Cabrini's Senior Day and the Cavaliers looked for revenge four days later.
The Atlantic East semifinal between the Cavaliers and the Griffins went down to the wire as it was a back-and-forth contest all night. In the end, Cabrini came out on top 72-68 behind a 17-point performance from
Miranda Liebtag and advanced to the conference championship.
KNOW YOUR OPPONENT
The Marymount Saints earned the No. 1 seed after a nearly perfect year in conference play going 11-1 and 21-4 in the regular season. The Saints only conference loss came from 61-54 loss to Immaculata back on Jan. 18.
Offensively, the Saints are led by Chandler Eddleton's 15.3 points per game as she currently sits fifth in the conference in the category. Symantha Shackelford's 14.1 points a game are second behind Eddleton and good for seventh in the conference. On the defensive side, Eddleton leads the Saints in rebounds per game (8.1), also good for fifth in the conference, just behind Cabrini's
Katie Rodriguez's 8.3.
SCOUTING THE CAVS
Liebtag has been Cabrini's offensive catalyst for much of the season as the senior is the only player averaging double figures at 13.5 points per game. Junior
Abby Paolini follows Liebtag with 9.7 per game while three other Cavaliers average 6.5 points or more. Defensively, Rodriguez leads her squad in both boards (8.3) and blocks per game (2.6). Her 2.6 blocks per game put her at 15th in the nation while her 71 total blocks are good for ninth.
LAST TIME WE MET
The last time these two squads met was a thrilling overtime battle back on Jan. 28 that saw Marymount outlast Cabrini 65-61. The Saints own the all-time season series between the two teams boasting a 9-2 record as Marymount has won the last six meetings.
LOOKING AHEAD
The Cavaliers look to end their six-game losing streak to the Saints on Saturday and there would be no better way to do it than win the conference championship and earn the Atlantic East Conference's automatic bid to the NCAA tournament.
