READING, Pa. – The Cabrini women's basketball team dropped a narrow 47-45 decision Wednesday night at Commonwealth Conference opponent Albright College. Senior guard Alyssa Brady led the Cavaliers with a game-best 17 points and nine rebounds.
After senior forward Kasey Agostinacchio sunk two free throws with 45 seconds remaining in the second half, sophomore guard Laura Caron's foul sent Albright's Rory Yerkes to the foul line. Yerkes missed the front-end of the one-and-one, giving Cabrini a last shot at a win.
However, Brady's missed lay-in attempt was pulled down by Yerkes with seven seconds remaining, securing the season-opening victory for the Lions.
Brady shot 8-for-14 from the field overall and dished three assists. In two games this season, Brady has twice led the Cavaliers in scoring, also notching a team-high 10 points at Widener November 15.
Senior guard Kate Walck overcame a forgetful season debut versus the Pride, scoring 14 points and recording seven rebounds against Albright. Walck shot 6-for-10 from the floor overall, including 2-for-3 from beyond the 3-point line.
Freshman guard Brittany Newcomer scored six points in 11 minutes off the bench.
Cabrini held a one-point advantage at the intermission, 24-23. The Cavaliers rebounded from a paltry 14 percent shooting performance in the first half versus Widener Sunday with a 35.5 percent clip against the Lions.
The Blue & White pushed its advantage to as much as eight points, 41-33, in the second half at the 8:27 mark. Albright responded with a 10-0 run, establishing a 43-41 edge with 2:55 on the clock.
Becca Pollack broke a 43-43 stalemate with one free throw at the 2:00 mark. Two more charity tosses from Kari Ludy just six seconds later supplied the Lions with a 46-43 lead, setting the stage for Agostinacchio's two foul shots.
The Cavaliers' defense continues to be a strong suit in the early-goings. Sunday against Widener, Cabrini's defense forced 26 turnovers. Versus Albright, the Blue & White induced 24 miscues.
Mallory Olsheski turned in a double-double for the hosts with 11 points and 12 rebounds. Jessica McGinness totaled 11 points and six rebounds in a reserve role.
Cabrini (0-2) opens its home schedule versus Landmark Conference No. 5 the University of Scranton Tuesday, November 24 at 6 p.m. Cavaliers head coach Kate Pearson was a four-year letterwinner for the Lady Royals at the guard position, twice earning All-America honors and scoring nearly 1,300 points.
