RADNOR, Pa. – The Cabrini women's soccer team won its 11th straight match and will play in the Colonial States Athletic Conference (CSAC) championship match for the first time since the 2003 season after a 3-1 victory against Centenary College Wednesday at Edith Robb Dixon Field.
The Cavaliers jumped on the Cyclones early in the first, scoring two goals in the opening seven minutes of the first half. Sophomore midfielder Sammy Thompson handed Cabrini a 1-0 lead with her fourth goal of the year at the 3:17 mark off a pass from junior midfielder Dana Nardello.
The Blue & White added its second goal of the game at the 6:19 mark. Thompson's cross into the box and to the opposite post found junior forward Annmarie Kolla for her eight goal of the season. Kolla's one-touch beat Centenary goalkeeper Ashley Denti.
Cabrini pushed its lead to three goals, 3-0, in the 52nd minute when sophomore midfielder Kara Hinkelmon found the back of the net from 25-yards out for her fifth score in 2009. Senior forward Sabina DeGisi recorded the assist on the score.
The Cyclones trimmed its deficit to two goals in the 62nd minute. Caroline Mountney scored Centenary's lone goal of the contest at the 61:03 mark after dribbling the ball into the box and beating Cabrini goalkeeper Maddy Edwards from 12-yards out.
The Cyclones' offense continued to pressure the Cavaliers' backline throughout the second half. However, the Cavaliers defense, led by Edwards and junior back Brianna Conner, answered the bell and stymied the Centenary attack.
“We were able to score early and play phenomenal defense in the second half,” said eighth-year head coach Ken Prothero. “Maddy [Edwards] and Brianna [Conner] were huge for us on defense. They played great.”
Edwards notched 11 saves for the Cavaliers in the victory. Denti posted three stops in the season-ending loss for the Cyclones.
The Blue & White last hoisted the CSAC trophy in 2003 as the tournament's No. 4 seed. The Cavaliers knocked off Gwynedd-Mercy College in penalty kicks.
Cabrini (13-5-1) will meet defending CSAC champion and top seed Marywood University in the championship match Saturday, November 7 at Immaculata University. Game time is set for 3 p.m.
