ST. DAVID'S, Pa. – The Cabrini women's soccer team made the short trek across Eagle Road Tuesday afternoon for a date with backyard-rival Eastern University. Eastern held off the Cavaliers, 3-2, in the teams' first meeting since the 2007 season.
Freshman goalkeeper Maddy Edwards made her first career start in net for the Blue & White. Edwards stood tall to the task, posting 15 saves, including several stops on Eastern attempts from the doorstep.
Junior forward Annmarie Kolla and sophomore midfielder Sammy Thompson shared the scoring load for Cabrini, each finding the twine once. Thompson's goal in the 8th minute knotted the scoring at one goal apiece.
The Eagles jumped out to a one-goal advantage at 6:44 mark. Senior midfielder Lauren Roe's serve into the box beat the Cavaliers' backline and landed on the foot of senior forward Jillian DiRenzo for the 1-0 lead.
Just 45 seconds following, Thompson converted a corner kick attempt from senior forward Heather Thompson, beating Eastern goalkeeper Whitney McCloud to the far post.
The Eagles owned a 2-1 edge at the intermission after freshman forward Alysia Goodman put home a rebound in the 36th minute. Sophomore midfielder Allison Inch's initial try was stopped by Edwards. However, the freshman keeper deflection left an open net score for Inch.
Eastern pushed its lead to two goals, 3-1, in the 62nd minute. DiRenzo's struck again, this time receiving a feed from Inch.
Cabrini trimmed its deficit to one goal, 3-2, with more than 20 minutes remaining when Kolla directed home a feed across the box from freshman midfielder Dana Drake.
However, the Eagles, one year removed from a trip to the Elite Eight round of the NCAA Tournament, held off the Cavaliers' late rally for their second win of the season.
Cabrini (2-3-0) returns home Saturday, September 19 against Arcadia University. Match time is set for 4 p.m. at Edith Robb Dixon Field.
