RADNOR, Pa. – The Cabrini women's soccer team wrapped up festival play with a 4-2 victory against Delaware Valley College Saturday morning at Edith Robb Dixon Field. Senior Sabina DeGisi's hat trick powered the Cavaliers to their second in three games to open the 2009 season.
DeGisi scored the lone goal of the first half and added two more in the closing period, including the game winner in the 71st minute. Rookie Maddy Edwards deposited the Cavaliers fourth score.
Cabrini won the shots battle, out-shooting the Aggies, 24-9. DeGisi led the effort, recording eight shots. Edwards and classmate Dana Drake notched four shots each.
Junior goalkeeper Gianna Porretta totaled four saves for her second win of the season.
DeGisi's marker at the 6:07 mark of the first half provided the game's first score, finding the back of the net from just inside the left box.
The Cavaliers owned a 1-0 edge at halftime. However, Delaware Valley tied the scoring at 1-1 in the 56th minute when sophomore Dana Gentile converted a lead pass from junior Sam Loeber just 10 yards in front of the Cabrini goal.
The Blue & White regained the lead less than eight following after Edwards gathered a loose ball in the box and beat Aggies netminder freshman Elizabeth McQuillan. DeGisi's second score, a 25-yard direct kick, supplied the Cavaliers' with a two-goal cushion, 3-1.
Delaware Valley trimmed its deficit in half and pulled to within one goal, 3-2, at the 72:37 mark. Sophomore Ariel Butera's serve into the box deflected off a Cabrini defender and caromed into the back of the net.
The Cavaliers reasserted a two-goal advantage when Edwards set-up DeGisi's final tally from 10 yards out.
McQuillan recorded six saves in a losing effort for the Aggies. Butera led Del Val on the offensive end, notching a team-best four shots.
Cabrini (2-1-0) returns to the road Saturday, September 12 versus former Colonial States Athletic Conference (CSAC) foe Wesley College at 6 p.m.
