NEW YORK – For the third time in the last three years, the Cabrini women's basketball team played a regular season game at Madison Square Garden and left the “World's Most Famous Arena” with a victory, this year knocking off Colonial States Athletic Conference (CSAC) opponent Immaculata University.
Senior combo guard Alyssa Brady and senior point guard Deana DiAmico carried the load for the Cavaliers on the offensive end. Brady notched her second double-double in three games with 21 points and 13 rebounds. DiAmico matched a season-best with 20 points and added four rebounds.
Senior combo guard Kate Walck tallied nine points. Walck knocked down 5-of-7 free throws in the final 1:11 of the second half, sealing the Cabrini victory.
Sophomore combo guard Laura Caron totaled seven points and sophomore forward Kara Hinkelmon chipped in six points. Junior guard Julie Bonomo contributed 24 minutes played off the Cavaliers' bench.
Cabrini led by five points at the intermission, 29-24, shooting 35.5 percent from the floor overall. DiAmico scored 10 points in the opening half, draining 4-of-7 field goal tries and 2-of-5 3-point attempts. She shot 7-for-13 for the game overall.
The Cavaliers and Mighty Macs found themselves in a game of cat-and-mouse in the second half. Immaculata trailed by three points on eight different occasions. IU trimmed its deficit to just one point, 45-44, at the 6:03 mark.
The Blue & White responded with a 12-4 run over the next 3:17 and owned a nine-point advantage 57-48 with 2:46 remaining. Brady capped the decisive spurt with a 3-point basket off a feed from Caron. The Cavaliers led by 10 points, 60-50, with 71 seconds left.
Immaculata junior forward Chelsea McTigue led three scorers in double figures with 16 points. Sophomore forward Kelly Brown and freshman point guard Chrissy Esbensen each kicked in 10 points. The Mighty Macs shot just 28.8 percent from the floor for the game.
The Cavaliers are now 3-0 all-time at Madison Square Garden, following a 71-37 victory against the College of Notre Dame in 2008 and a 47-40 triumph versus Neumann University in 2009.
Immaculata, winners of three straight national championships (1972-74), earned a 65-61 victory against Queens College in the first women's basketball game played at Madison Square Garden Feb. 25, 1977.
Cabrini (8-7, 6-2) plays the last of a six-game homestand Tuesday, January 26 versus Montclair State University. Game time is set for 6 p.m.
