CENTER VALLEY, Pa. – The Cabrini women's basketball team shot 44.8 percent from the floor and out-scored DeSales University by 21 points in the second half en route to a 73-55 non-conference road victory Wednesday night. For the second straight game, the Cavaliers scored four players in double figures en route to the win.
Senior combo guard Alyssa Brady led the balanced scoring attack for Cabrini, tallying 18 points, grabbing six rebounds and dishing six assists. Brady scored 10 of her 18 points from the foul line.
Senior combo guard Kate Walck poured in 17 points, shooting 5-for-10 from the field overall, and recorded a season-high nine rebounds. Senior point guard Deana DiAmico added 15 points, shooting 5-for-9, and five assists. Brady, Walck and DiAmico each knocked down two 3-point field goals.
Sophomore forward Kara Hinkelmon established a career-high in points for the second straight game. She scored 16 points against DeSales on 6-for-8 shooting. Hinkelmon, who also grabbed eight boards against the Bulldogs, tallied 15 points in the Cavaliers' last game against St. Mary's (Md.) College Jan. 3.
Cabrini trailed by three points at halftime, 31-28. The Cavaliers shot 39.1 percent from the floor in the first half as DiAmico led the offense with nine points. Brady added eight points despite shooting 1-for-6 from the field.
The Blue & White secured just its third lead of the game, 44-43, at the 13:36 mark of the second half and never looked in the rearview mirror. Cabrini used a 9-0 run to grab a 51-43 cushion with 11:42 remaining. DiAmico capped the burst with two free throws.
After DSU trimmed its deficit to four points, 51-47, at the 10:34 mark, the Cavaliers answered with a 19-5 run over the ensuing 9:55 to clinch the victory. Brady and Walck combined to score 15 points down the stretch during the decisive run.
The Cavaliers shot 75.9 percent from the charity stripe, converting 22-of-29 free throws. After early-season struggles, Cabrini is shooting 78.2 percent from the foul line in its last two games.
Senior guard Kelly Magrann scored a team-high 14 points for the Bulldogs in 35 minutes off the bench. Senior guard Kaila Wiand tallied 12 points for DSU.
The Cabrini win avenges two losses at the hands of DeSales the last two seasons. The Cavaliers suffered a 65-44 loss versus the Bulldogs in 2007-08 and a 68-60 setback against No. 18 DSU last season.
Cabrini (5-5, 2-0) resumes its Colonial States Athletic Conference (CSAC) regular season schedule Monday, Jan. 11 at home against Gwynedd-Mercy College at 6 p.m. The Cavaliers and Griffins have played in each of the last two CSAC title games. Cabrini won both games, punching its ticket to the NCAA Tournament each season.
