Volleyball Falls Short in Home Opener Against Widener University, 3-1

Freshman setter Alaina Clark posted her sixth double-double of the season in a 3-1 loss versus Widener University on Thursday.

The Cabrini volleyball team had its two-match win streak ended on Thursday night in its 2010 home opener against Commonwealth Conference opponent Widener University, 3-1. Freshman setter Alaina Clark posted her sixth double-double the season, and second in consecutive matches, for the Cavaliers in the loss.

Clark paired a career-best 41 assists with 26 digs. Freshman outside hitter Sophia Sokolovich also recorded a double-double, her fourth of the season, with 27 digs and a career-high 13 kills.

Junior outside hitter Alexis Doss matched Sokolovich on the offensive end, also totaling 13 kills. Senior middle hitter Stephanie Recklau tallied nine kills.

Junior libero Courtney Abel notched 23 digs. Freshman defensive specialist Kristy Riley and freshman defensive specialist Carly Cagle registered 16 and 10 digs, respectively. Cabrini's 113 digs as a team is a season-high.

Freshman middle hitter Michele Fitz and Recklau each posted five total blocks. Sokolovich logged four block assists.

Widener grabbed a one-set advantage with a narrow 27-25 victory in game one. The Cavaliers evened the match at 1-1 with a 25-19 triumph in the second set.

The Pride secured the upper-hand with a  25-16 win in the third frame. Widener put the match away with a 27-25 triumph in the fourth set.

Sophomore outside hitter Angela DiMaria led the Pride offense with a team-best 14 kills. Junior setter Jamie Ballew served 46 assists.

Cabrini (9-4) resumes its Colonial States Athletic Conference (CSAC) schedule on Saturday, Sept. 25 versus Baptist Bible College. Match time against the Defenders is set for 4 p.m.
