IMMACULATA, Pa. – The Cabrini women's basketball team placed three scorers in double figures, but could not overcome a slow scoring start in the first half en route to a 65-56 loss at Colonial States Athletic Conference (CSAC) opponent Immaculata University on Thursday night. Freshman guard Brittany Sandone led all scorers with 15 points.
Sandone reached double digits for the fifth time this season, shooting 6-for-12 from the field overall. She also knocked down 3-of-5 3-point field goal attempts.
Freshman forward Colleen Stewart set a career-best with 12 points on 5-for-9 shooting. Stewart helped lead the Cavaliers' effort inside, corralling six rebounds and blocking two shots.
Freshman forward Annie Rivituso also eclipsed a career-high, netting 10 points on 3-for-4 shooting. Rivituso was perfect from the foul line (4-for-4) and gathered three boards.
Junior guard Laura Caron mixed eight points with four rebounds and four steals. Sophomore center Melissa Kudzmas matched Stewart's six boards.
The Mighty Macs wasted no time after the opening whistle against the Blue & White, racing to a 14-2 advantage at the 12:29 mark. The Cavaliers shot just 25.9 percent in the first half and faced a 12-point hole, 29-17, at the intermission.
However, Cabrini scored 12 of the second half's opening 19 points and trimmed its deficit to seven points, 36-29, with 15:58 remaining. Sandone keyed the spurt with two 3-point field goals.
Yet, Immaculata answered and re-asserted a 15-point cushion, 53-38, at the 8:52 mark.
Down the stretch, the Blue & White pulled within six points, 60-54, with 2:10 left. The Mighty Macs drained 3-of-4 free throw tries in the final 30 seconds.
The Immaculata offense boasted four scorers in double figures. Junior forward Chelsea McTigue and sophomore guard Chrissy Esbensen led the way for the Mighty Macs, each scoring 14 points.
Cabrini (4-10, 3-3 CSAC) returns home and continues its CSAC regular season slate on Saturday against Centenary College at 1 p.m.
