RADNOR, Pa. – The Cabrini College women's soccer team advanced the 2011 Colonial States Athletic Conference semifinals with tonight's 2-0 victory over the visiting Gwynedd-Mercy College Griffins. The Cavaliers improved to 11-5-2 with the win.
The Blue and White opened the scoring in the ninth minute when a corner kick from senior
Kara Hinkelmon found junior
Dana Drake making a run to the far post. Drake slotted the ball past Griffins goalie Abby Reed for her fourth goal of the season.
The Cavaliers continued to press for the second goal of the game, evidenced by a 9-2 shot advantage and eight corner kicks before the halftime break.
Cabrini did not rest on a one goal advantage in the second half. They continued to push the pace, recording 11 shots after the break. While Cabrini goaltender
Maddy Edwards and the Cabrini defense remained strong, the offense was looking for one opportunity to put the game away.
That opportunity came in the 88th minute when senior
Sammy Thompson got the ball near midfield, beat a defender and was on a sprint for the goal. The senior calmly placed a shot just passed Reed into the near post for her sixth goal of the year.
Edwards recorded five saves for her 10th shutout of the year.
Cabrini will travel to Scranton, Pa. on Wednesday to face Marywood University in the CSAC semifinals.
