ASTON, Pa. – For the third consecutive year, the Cabrini College volleyball team made the NCAA Tournament and faced Juniata College. Unfortunately for the Cavaliers, the third time wasn't the charm as they fell to the Eagles 3-0 at Neumann University's Mirenda Center on Friday.
The Cavaliers knew they were in for a tough match as Juniata entered the tournament ranked eighth in the latest American Volleyball Coaches Association poll. Though the Blue and White put forth a valiant effort, the Eagles proved to be too strong, taking the straight set victory 25-13, 25-7, 27-25.
Through the first two sets, Juniata controlled much of the play. Each time it looked as though Cabrini was ready to make a comeback, the Eagles made the necessary play to regain the serve.
The Cavaliers mounted a charge in the third set. Cabrini stayed close throughout the set, not allowing Juniata to pull away as they had in the first two sets. Trailing 23-20, the Blue and White rallied for four points, to secure its first set point in the three NCAA Tournament matches against Juniata.
Junior
Danielle Carrozza paced the Cavaliers with nine kills and a team-high 20 digs. Senior
Alexis Doss' five kills give her 1,009 for her career. Sophomore
Michele Fitz also recorded five kills. Sophomore
Sophia Sokolovich added 14 digs, while fellow sophomore
Alaina Clark tallied 20 assists.
Today's match marks the end of the careers of seniors
Courtney Abel, Doss and
Beth Gillespie. The ladies were members of teams that amassed 90 wins, including three consecutive CSAC championships.
In the opening game of Friday's Mid-Atlantic Regional, Mt. Union defeated Lebanon Valley College 3-2. Juniata and Mount Union will meet in Saturday's first regional semifinal at 3:30 at the Mirenda Center.
Saturday's second semifiinal will pit Hiram College, who defeated Stevenson University 3-1, against the winner of Friday's nightcap between #4 Eastern University and Penn State - Altoona.
The winners of Saturday's semifinal matches will play in the regional final on Sunday for the right to advance to the NCAA "Sweet 16."
Cabrini closes the 2011 campaign with a 22-11 record.
