READING, Pa. – The Cabrini College women's basketball team held a slim lead for the first 30 minutes of Tuesday night's game at Alvernia University. Unfortunately, college basketball games are 40 minutes. The Cavaliers couldn't hold on for the last 10 minutes of the game, falling 52-48. Cabrini's record now stands at 1-2 on the young season.
The Crusaders scored the first few buckets of the game, but the Cavaliers responded to take an early 7-4 lead. Alvernia again took a brief lead but a three-pointer by junior
Renee Deas gave the Blue and White a 14-12 lead with 13:27 to play in the first half.
Though the score would remain close, the Cavaliers held on to their advantage, extending it to six points twice before the break.
With the Cavaliers leading 34-28 four minutes into the second half, the Crusaders took control of the game's momentum and the score board. Alvernia embarked on an 18-4 run over the next 11 minutes to take a 46-38 lead. With just over five minutes to play, the Cavaliers found themselves in a difficult situation.
Cabrini cut their deficit to just two points three times in the game's final 3:31 but could not make the big play to tie the game.
The Cavaliers shot just 30.8% from the floor in the second half, including 0-7 from beyond the three-point line. The Crusaders also converted Cabrini's 10 second half turnovers into 12 points.
Sophomore
MaryKate McCann led the Cavaliers with 10 points off the bench. Fellow sophomores
Annie Rivituso and
Brittany Sandone added eight and nine points, respectively.
Jenn Casper grabbed a game-high eight rebounds for Cabrini.
The Cavaliers will return to the court on Monday, November 28 when they open CSAC play with a visit from the Neumann University Knights.
Cabrini's women and men's teams will host Neumann in a conference doubleheader at Nerney Field House. Tip-off for the women's game is scheduled for 6:00 p.m. with the men to follow at 8:00 p.m.
