RADNOR, Pa. – For the sixth consecutive year, the Cabrini College women's basketball team opened conference play with a victory. Tonight, the Cavaliers downed the visiting Neumann University Knights, recording their first Colonial States Athletic conference victory of the season and evening their overall record at 2-2.
Cabrini used its stingy defense to take control of the game in its early stages. Midway through the half, the Cavaliers held a 12-4 lead. Three minutes later, a three-pointer by junior
Renee Deas extended Cabrini's lead to 16-4.
At the break, the Blue and White led 20-12, allowing the Knights to connect on just 12.5% of their shots, including 0-11 from three-point range.
The Knights tried to mount a comeback early in the second half, with six consecutive points. Freshman
Amber Keys' lay-up ended the Neumann run, pushing Cabrini's lead back to seven points. A
Melissa Kudzmas lay-up put the Cavaliers up 13 points with 9:33 to play.
Neumann rallied for five quick points, but the Blue and White again responded. This time with a 9-0 run, punctuated by Keys' three-point play to put Cabrini up 44-29 with 4:23 on the clock.
Cabrini's defense came up big today, holding Neumann to just 18.2% shooting from the field, including 1-23 from beyond the three-point line.
Sophomore
Brittany Sandone paced the Cavaliers with 13 points. Fellow sophomore
Annie Rivituso added nine points and grabbed a team-high 10 rebounds.
Leithie Faison chipped in with eight points, five boards, and three steals. Keys finished with seven points.
Bethany Humenik led the Knights with 11 points and 11 rebounds in the loss.
The Cavaliers will welcome the Notre Dame (Md.) University Gators to the Nerney Field House on Wednesday night. The CSAC tilt will tip at 6:00 p.m.
