RADNOR, Pa. – Top seeded Cabrini College won its third consecutive Colonial States Athletic Conference title tonight at Nerney Field House, defeating the number two seed Neumann University Knights 3-0. Saturday's final marked Cabrini's fourth consecutive appearance in the CSA final match. The Cavaliers become the first three-peat winners since Eastern University's run of 10 straight crowns ended in 2007.
The Blue and White struggled early, falling behind 5-1 in the first game. The Cavaliers cut Neumann's lead to one point at 9-8, but five quick points by the Knights forced Cabrini head coach
Eric Schaefer to call a timeout. Neumann pushed their advantage to 16-9 before Cabrini mounted its comeback.
The Blue and White won 11 of the next 15 points to tie the set at 20. Neumann forced a set point at 24-22 and had the serve when Cabrini shut the door. A kill by junior Megan Ryan returned the serve back to Cabrini and three points on serves by sophomore libero
Sophia Sokolovich clinched the 26-24 set win.
The Cavaliers looked like a well oiled machine in the second set. Cabrini scored the first six points of the set and never looked back. Trailing 9-2 the Knights called a timeout but the Cavaliers continued their assault, extending their lead to 13-3.
Neumann mounted a comeback of their own late in the second set but it was too late as Cabrini took the set 25-17.
Both teams played the third set very evenly. Neither team could grasp the momentum. Each team seemed to win two or three consecutive points at a time. The final tie of the match came at 17. A kill by junior
Danielle Carrozza gave the Cavaliers a lead they would not relinquish, en route to a 25-21 win.
Set three was highlighted by senior
Alexis Doss who recorded her 1,000th career kill midway through the set.
Doss paced a balanced Cavaliers offense with a game-high 13 kills. Ryan and Carrozza added 12 kills each. Carrozza added 16 digs for her 14th double-double of the year. Sokolovich recorded a match-high 17 digs.
Carrozza was named 2011 CSAC Volleyball Championship Most Valuable Player.
Cabrini (22-10) will wait until next week to learn their opponent and destination for the opening round of the NCAA Tournament.
